Some of you know we have been having some worries over ds in all sorts of areas. Bused into city with ds at 10 this morning (live in small town) to go to paed. Paed pointed out how far behind he was on physical milestones in particular (gee that felt good) and then weighed him, he has lost weight . Decided to redo tests for gluten so went to medlab and had them done. Then had to waste 2hrs to wait for bus back home with very tired ds. Finally got back home, he is fast asleep now but didnt really eat at lunch or dinner because of being over tired and even missed a bfeed to boot so I feel really guilty that my already failure to thrive baby missed out even further today. Trying to focus on what he can do...
Stand holding coffee table when placed there and take shaky wide steps when both hands are held by adult.
Sit really well and go into lying on front position from sitting, pull himself up to a kneeling position
Say mama indescriminately and play a game of give to me, give back to you with a noise that almost sounds like ta, makes another noise that sounds a bit like hello too.
Wave when in the mood, clap his hands, play with the textures in the textures books
Pick up raisins one by one and get a preloaded spoon kinda to the right place. So anyway he's ok, he's ok, he's ok, if I keep saying it it will be true, right...tell me about your babies that had you worried silly and it all turned out ok or at least not as bad as it looked. thank you all for your ongoing support.

yawningmonster- whatever happens it's the not knowing that is worse- honestly believe me. Good that they're checking gluten again although I'd still recommend trying to orgnaise an IAG urine test (as that's more specific for gluten problems and developmental problems), and emailing Paul Shattock- he'll know where's best to get it done near you. You just post it off so involves no traipsing anywhere.

Anyway positive story ds2 was dxed with a speech disorder in July 04 (all his speech sounds came in the the wrong order half were missing). By mid Aug 04 he was talking fluently (went from incomprehensible to clear within a week)

thanks jimjams can you give me the paul shaddock link again please as I couldnt for the life of me get the other one to work and when I google him, there was lots of info but no how to contact details. We have had urine tests b4 for various things including gluten not sure if they were the one you are talking about and whether it is worth getting redone if it is the same one. That is some amazing progress for you ds, well done to him.

not really well done - I suspect he was using his older (non verbal) brother as a model and it was only with nursery that he realised children spoke. Or maybe he did have something weird going on- I often think his language is a bit odd- it's likely given the family history.

paul shattock link here. If you email the autism.unit address you will get to him. More on the urine analysis as well. The IAG test is quite specific and not done in many places, but worth checking as definitely no point in doing again if it has already been done.

no worries ym- ruty contacted PS when her ds was about 6 months old as he had gut and development problems- I know he was helpful and her ds is doing well now. PS is very lovely tbh- very genuine man. His son is autistic so he understands the emotional side of worrying about development as well.
