(Nearly) 6 week old woken up with a nasty cold

...and she's not very happy about it. :(. I have the same cold and am b/feeding, so hopefully I'll be able to pass on some antibodies.

In the meantime though, what's the best way to handle it? Feeding isn't going well, as her nose is blocked. I'm loathe to take her to the GP and expose her to more germs, plus what can they do for a cold?

I would obviously go if it's worthwhile, though.

Any recommendations, especiallÅ· re unblocking her, would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

you can get saline drops from the chemist and you can also get waht I would call a 'snot sucker' i.e. nasal aspirator

I had this problem when my DS was 6 weeks... Saline drops and a basal aspirator worked brilliantly, but he was bloody furious every time I did it.
Propping him up to sleep is a good idea.
If he gets a cough, take him to the Dr.

Basal? I meant Nasal!

DD (21 weeks) has a cold too. We have been using the saline nasal spray which she tolerates much better than i expected. I have also been putting vicks on her chest each night after a bath and i have propped her cot up on some books so she is sleeping at a slight angle. It seems to help the snot drain and stops her coughing.

so far so good. hth.

Same here - my 8 week old is snotty and snuffly. And I am.

Like others I am using the saline nasal drops, plus steam - we run the bath tap or shower and sit in the steamy bathroom for a 10 minutes or so. Works really well, I do it just before a feed.

I also have the Karvol vapouriser in our room - should only be used from 3 months onwards but I'm not sure why? We are stilol using it to fair effect anyway.

Thanks so much everyone - some great ideas here.

I actually have a nasal aspirator but it is useless. Will try some of the other suggestions though.

:)
