Sleeping bag for 8 week old?

QuiteFickleDobby · 15/09/2010 11:26

My 8 week old has very strong legs and is very shuffly in his cot and ends up halfway up the cot above his blanket - I'm thinking a sleeping bag would be a better bet?

They were not readily available when my older DC's were babies so its all a bit new to me!

Where is the best place to get one/which sort should i look out for? Are they even suitable for young babies?

Try a Grobag? or generic grobag equivalent. these are recommended as the safest bedding - i believe - as they cannot cover the face and suffocate. try tk maxx for discounted branded grobags or other baby outlets for other brands. just bear in mind age/size and also tog / thickness for the season or temperature in the bedroom.

can't type properly - holding ds

Sleeping bags are fantastic, your baby is old enough no problem. As soon as we started to use with both DC, they slept so well.

John Lewis, any major retailer, google them. Grobags are the well known ones, though tend to be quite pricey.

I swore by our sleeping bags for about 18 months with each of them.

Unfortunately, we've sold them on, but pretty sure they were John Lewis.... here you go. You can get cheaper elsewhere, but our original one was a gift and we liked it so much we went back to JL for our next one.....

Thanks! Have been looking online - WOW! There is a vast array of sleeping bags out there! Will have to go out and have a feel of them in some shops.

Daft question alert: Is it possible/easy to change baby's nappy with him in a sleeping bag?

OP posts:

Not daft, the answer is yes, They have poppers over the shoulder and zip all the way around the edge and bottom.

So baby could still have shoulder straps done up, you simply unzip all the way around and fold back or push bag to one side and change nappy. I used to change mine whilst in their's, though can be a bit awkward if bag not fully pushed out of the way!, if you get my drift. Also the baby might grab the bag and pull it back into exactly where you don't want it whilst changing their nappy!

QuiteFickleDobby · 15/09/2010 12:39

Thanks anonymousbird.

I'm figuring it may be tricky - changing his nappy is a task and a half at the best of times (big wriggler - dreading the turning over/crawling stage!) - but I'm pretty sure he woke up last night as he was a bit chilly so a sleeping bag may resolve that!

Last time I dealt with newborn sleeping was 10 years ago with DD - and she stayed covered up, where I put her, all night!

Sleeping bags are great!

My 12 week old has been in them since week 2 (they usually recommend baby is over 8lbs) and would kick off any amount of sheets (and does during naps).

Grobags are the original and are good. I have 2 grobags (1 tog and 2.5 tog) an M&S 1 tog (great) and another 2.5 type given as a gift. This last one is no longer in use as it is too short - beware they need the length of the Grobag or equivalent.

I got confused with the tog types to begin with and this is a useful page on the grobag site (see "sizes and togs" half way down the page) to show you which one to get and what to dress your LO in, but for winter you'll need the 2.5.

I bought one of the car seat adaptable ones (it has extra holes so you don't have to take the bag off if you need to trasport them buckled up) which is good, but honestly haven't needed that function yet.

LifeOfKate · 15/09/2010 16:40

Definitely TKMaxx, that's where I buy mine from now. I'm not so keen on the grobag ones personally (although I do have one which you can use in a car seat which might be handy at some point), TKMaxx sells lots of different types, all normally about £10 or £12.99. Also, I've found the supermarket sleeping bags good, have good ones from both Tesco and Asda, they are about £10 each, the only 'problem' I've found is that they only do up to 12 months, and I am determined to keep DS in one for as long as possible :o

Rhubarbgarden · 15/09/2010 18:52

I found myself getting confused and anxious about right number of togs for room temperature, and obsessing about how cold/warm it got overnight, so I invested in a merino sleeping bag that keeps the baby cool
or warm as necessary and I don't have to think about it. It was pricey but worth it - when it's in the wash and she's in one of her other bags, she fidgets and doesn't seem to sleep as well.

MrsMc82 · 15/09/2010 19:59

Got ours from amazon, they're fab for wriggly babies - DS hated to be swaddled right from day one and even broke free of one of those velcro swaddle blankets so the sleeping bags have been a godsend!! X

QuiteFickleDobby · 16/09/2010 09:38

Thanks all for your input- I got one yesterday to start with from Tesco for £12 and baby slept well and was cosy. I'll look into TKMaxx and other places when I have time. I can feel a bit of a sleeping bag obsession coming on. He will probably end up with about 20 Blush

Rhubarbgarden, I too am a bit Confused at all the tog ratings but we have no heating until next week Angry so went for a 2tog and he was comfortably warm (he is a fairly warm baby, as opposed to my other DC who was a cold baby - why can't they be all the same?!) I may look into a merino one though - this house gets really cold in the middle of the winter even with heating.

Hehe, I'm with you on the sleeping bag obsession, I have just bought another 2 for DS (as he will have grown out of his warm ones by the time it starts to get really cold), he has now had 10 sleeping bags in his 9 months Blush

In my defence, he has grown out of 4 of them (all 2.5 tog 0-6 months), is currently using 4 depending on weather (they are 6-12 months, 2 are 1 tog and 2 are 2.5 tog) and then has the 2 new ones (both 2.5 tog) for the winter :o I seem to have an inability to buy one sleeping bag at a time, I've always bought 2 at once! It is more useful to have 2 they can wear so that one can be in the wash and one be used at the same time :)

Roo83 · 16/09/2010 13:48

Love them, they are brilliant. Both mine used them from birth (most are suitable from 7lbs). I like the grobag branded ones-just seem softer and better quality than some others. Id go for a couple of 2.5tog from now through to the winter-then you have a change in case of accidents

JABnowJAR · 22/09/2010 15:38

Ikea do some nice ones and are reasonably priced.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/09/2010 15:42

I got some great Grobag brand ones from TKMaxx for £6 each.

Flossie69 · 22/09/2010 20:02

The Matalan ones are great, at £9 a go, but come up quite small compared to ther brands.
