Just a basic has done us fine. Might be worth taking your son to choose his own - he is more likely to like it if he picked it (and if he wants pink n flowery, then give it to him )... DD has a very manly blue one, and loves it

Just get a few cheap ones (upstairs, downstairs, anywhere else...). They're only going to get pooed and weed in after all

I got a 99p on in Morrisons for DS1

Although I did 'splash out' on that portable potty thing for when we were going out as he was pretty slow at picking it up and couldn't hold it very long for quite some time.

We found that a potty chair was best. DD did have cheaper, normal potties at grandparents and nursery, but much prefered the chair type, especially when on there for longer periiods of time They are also eeaiser for them to lever theirselves in and out. Oh, and more room for sticking on those all important reward stickers

If for a boy, get one with a raised bit at the front as they do tend to wee everywhere.

super1971 · 02/09/2005 20:43

do you get them to wee sitting down at first then teach them standing up

Well I did but my ds1 had a deformity of his penis and couldn't wee straight. Ds2 just liked sitting down and now ds3 has the same deformity as ds1 but his wee comes out even more crookedly and he often wees over himself even sitting! It is a pain in the a**e.

But generally, yes I think most boys first wee sitting down - don't they anyone else?

pesha · 02/09/2005 21:48

I had normal potty for dd no probs but tried ds on it and his willy poked out the front, even with the raised bit, so i got a chair one and its fine, he finds it much more comfortable for sitting on too.

And yes i think most boys pee sitting down at 1st, wouldnt trust him to stand up and aim in the right place!! His dad has enough trouble!

cod?

You mean to say you have done all this without a potty at all?

chipmonkey · 02/09/2005 23:13

When ds1 was potty-training he always wee'd standing up.................in his pants. Grrrrrr.

chipmonkey · 02/09/2005 23:14

If you do get a chair type, make sure its easy to remove the potty bit. We had one that required a degree in engineering.

MummyJules · 02/09/2005 23:21

I would definetely go for a potty chair - we got two from Mothercare around £10.00 each and DD loves them. I also got some cheap stickers so everytime she does a wee or a poo on the potty she can decorate it. Have also got the portable potty although she doesn't seem to keen on that at the mo! Good luck

flamesparrow · 02/09/2005 23:44

Teach all boys to pee sat down and stay sat down... it will save the next generation of wives the hassle of nasty toilets after drunk husbands!
