So when did your DC go into a big bed?

I read a thread a while back where someone said that they had never heard of a DC still in a cot at 2.

Well my DTs are 2.7 and are still in their cots. Shock

These are very large cots that can be transformed into a bed by taking down one of the sides - I think they are called cot-beds. They are extreamly sturdy so DTs can't shake them about and because DTs are very small for their age, they can't climb out - though I think its just a matter of time.

They sleep very well and they go down at 7pm with no problems at all .... and that is why I am terrified of changing the status quo by taking down one of the sides.

So .... how much longer can I keep them imprisoned?

When they start climbing out! if they're happy and you're happy don't worry, go with the flow!!!, its the same size whether a cot or a bed!

We turned our cot-bed into a bed at around 18 months, but go with whatever works for you!

We moved DD aged 3.4 into a big bed from a standard size cot just today! She's quite tall for her age but loved her cot and we had to save up for DS's single bed so she could have his toddler bed Grin

DD has been a nightmare tonight as I thought she would be Sad

I can't understand why anyone would want to rush their toddlers into a big bed Confused

DS1 was in a big bed by 21 months as we needed the cot for the imminent arrival of DS2.

But DS2 is that age now and seems very young to go into a bed! I've no plans to move him anytime soon.

Ds1 was moved into a toddler bed at 19months, ds2 needed the cot. It was a breeze, no problems at all. Ds2 will be moved to the toddler bed before he's 2 as dc3 will need it Smile. Otherwise I would have let them stay in until they could climb out!

DS stayed in his "cage" until he was well over 4. He never climbed out, and wasn't interested in moving. DD at somewhere over 3 - she also liked it, and could climb in and out competently.

I've read this thread with interest - dd is 16 months and I was wondering whether to take the side off the cot and give her a bit more freedom, or even turn it into the cot-bed it adapts to, but reading everyone's comments makes me determined she can stay as she is!

20 months. He started to climb out and fall. He is also very tall and was filling his cot rather well.
Someone at work offered us a starter bed, so we took it and moved him in. He loved it.

DS was 18 months, DD was 13 months....she sometimes gets out for a little play before a nap but then gets into bed to sleep and never ever gets out at night time, just goes to sleep. She was jsut ready and I felt that, she is 15 months now...

ShowOfHands · 13/09/2010 14:06

DD's cot became a bed at around 15 months (though we mainly co-slept). She's 3.4 now and about to go into a single bed.

castille · 13/09/2010 14:15

DD2 was happy in her cot until she was 3.4 and DS was 3.6! Both went straight into a full-size single.

We moved DD1 aged 2 because we needed the cot and it was a nightmare of evening and early morning wanderings, for months.

So I am firmly in the keep-them-behind-bars camp until they are (a) too big, (b) too agile or (c) need to be able to get up to the loo on their ownGrin

Sullwah · 13/09/2010 15:32

Thanks everyone.

I still don't know what to do! Both DTs are starting to hook their foot on the top of the cot IYSWIM and chant "get out, get out, get out" ... so its only a matter of time before they climb out.

But I want them contained for as long as possible!

If you think they could get up and fall then I think the time is right to change the cot into a bed - probably not want you want to hear. My boy is 2.1 and I'm praying he remains happy in his cot for a while yet.
