A question for those who use cloth nappies___ would you use the old fashioned terry nappies squares that use pins or clips and are approx 40 x 40cm?

I am just curious really

My sis used them for eldest nephew 17 years ago

What I mean is that I realise the modern cloth nappies are cute etc and easy to use

But would you use the old fashioned ones which are just as good for the enviroment but clothes may not fit as well over them or be as easy to do up etc.

I don't mean the liners made of terry fabric I mean the ones that are like a bath towel thickness IYSWIM

Cos these would be cheaper cos one size fits all.

I don't want an arguement it is something that has puzzled me for a little while.

mum bought me the whole terry napyp malarky when i had jess but never used them!

Now use them as messy cloths for meal times and a few for cleaning windows!!!

Discovered kushies when jess was 3 motnhs old and she used them, and now wears tots bots or toddler kushies.

New baby will be in tots too...

I use them folded up rectangular in Fuzzi nappies. Cheaper than fuzzi's fillers and for DS, boosted with 99p for 3 Tesco's super absorbent cloths! Very quick-drying.

RTKangaMummy · 03/09/2005 23:09

do you dry them on the line?

I said to DH that they look lovely on the line BUT are they rough when dry?

I love towels that have been dried on the line but not sure how the roughness would be for babies or do you use conditioner?

Have used terries on a rare occasion, had a few for stuffing stuffable nappies and they were handy for emergencies. Preferred Tots or stuffables as they were quick and easy and seemed to have better absorbency/containment, although they could have just been my lack of folding skills.

caligula · 04/09/2005 10:25

If you add some white vinegar to the last rinse, it stops them from being so rough. Also, in winter you tend to tumble dry them off, so that also makes them softer.

suedonim · 04/09/2005 13:01

I've still got the terries I used on my ds's, who are 30 and 26yo, the terries come in useful for dd2's nosebleeds.

Personally, I loved disps when I had dd1&2. I tried the shaped nappies in my local baby shop and oh my, they were complicated, so many bits and pieces, liners and outers and things to do up etc. Terry squares do look cute on the line, though, and I love the fat bottoms they impart to the baby.

PeachyClair · 04/09/2005 14:01

We used them with clips for a few months, then as folded pads in stuffables for a year or so- and now as a handy if slightly worn selection of emergency dusters / spill mopper uppers!

I have used other cloth nappies too with other ds's, tbh the terry's were as easy and much cheaper too

I would and have used terry squares. Don't use them much because the lack of fit means they're more likely to leak. Dry them on the line - since we didn't have a tumble drier till last year everything was what you lot might call a bit rough - but if you've never known the difference it's not a problem.

ds has more skin problems when he wears things that other people have washed with conditioner than he does from the "rough" nappies.

SenoraPostrophe · 04/09/2005 14:13

giraffski - what is the wash quality like with those wash balls?

Have never used them. I do use prefolds if stuck but am a bit dyspraxic and never was good at folding anything. I love the "cute factor" of stuffable nappies like Minkies and fuzzi-bunz. Ds3 goes to nursery and the girl who looks after him looked very scared when I told her we used cloth so don't think I'd like to foist terries on her on top of that.

suedonim · 04/09/2005 17:10

The tumble drier balls from Lakeland help soften clothes without conditioner.

I use terry squares as fitted nappies are in the large minority here - lots of online looking etc for the fitted nappies.

Started with muslin squares ( I made myself) for dd2 when she was smaller - now use the terry squares.

SHe has fleece liners, use the nappy nippa to hold it all together and covered by plastic pilchers - some cloth covered some just straight plastic. Nippa helps hold them in sugly.

Easy soaking, washing and so quick to dry ( but I have the weather for it here in Aus)

Fold then into shape as they come off the line, put liner in and put in nappy stacker ready to go again.

Started with chinese or origami fold for when dd 2 was smaller and now do the kite fold.

Use padded prefolds for dd1 when I had her in cloth and have some padded prefold squares all ready to go for when dd2 is older.

Have also used the kushies plastic wraps or nature babies ones (which I bought in the UK) which are easy to put on over the nappy when it is in place also.

Don't use fabric softener - just wash them in aussie napisan ( different to Uk napisan) and hang them out in the sun - are yet to go hard.

Suedonim - my mum gave me the ones she used on my db's and I - over 40 years old - use them as clothes on the change mat..... still going strong. Some are just starting to wear thin.

Another thing I have to confess is that I tend to use my cutest nappies when out and about as I think I'm more likely to encourage others to use cloth if they see me changing ds in public and see that they are shaped like disposables and are as easy to use> Don't think terries lookvery inspiring on that front!

RTKangaMummy · 07/09/2005 12:28

BLOSS the 40 x 40 was just a guess

I wasn't sure how big they were so I just guessed but obviously my visualization of them and guesswork was wrong

Thanks for all the replies guys

chipmonkey - I'm exactly the same! I use folded Terry nappies/Junior Joy Wraps in the house but when I'm out and about I use shaped Bravo Nappies (in blue) with a blue football Wrap.

It just looks soooooo much nicer - I call it my showing off nappy

Amai · 11/09/2005 17:45

cant belive i missed this thread. Have used terries with dd for a year now with safety pins and plastic pants! Just discovered nappi nippas and have three ellie pants wraps. Cheap as chips but I get looser clothes for DDs arse region or else she looks scarily deformed. Would love to get mother ease wraps but the price puts me off every time.

spidermama · 11/09/2005 17:52

I used terries a lot with my first two then inherited shaped washables with my others so got into the habit of using those.

Terries have a lot to recommend them, especially with nappy nippers. They dry very quickly and I love the simplicity of them.

dinosaur · 11/09/2005 18:11

I am only just getting used to using cloth nappies at all - and this is my third child! So I can't see me being brave enough to experiement with terries...
