The thought of some mad woman ironing nappies is floating round in my head now... they probably iron socks too.

and pants...and tea towels

Hasn't this EA report already been roundly discredited?

Why are people so funny about the gel? It is inert and widely used in agriculture anyway. It simply holds water so could well be good for the environment if the earth is truly heating up.
I suspect the study was flawed btw, and I am a committed disposable user.

I still keep meaning to write to the environment agency about this.

If you read the report, the conclusion could equally well have been "some terry nappy users negate the benefits to the environment by using silly amounts of leccy when washing" It does not actually show that there is "no difference" at all.

My reasons for being funny about the gel are 1. That it is a bit stinky when you take the nappy off (although all nappies are a bit stinky, but there's something sort of rotten and sweet about the disposable smell that I personally find more unpleasant - not that I'm wildly enthusiastic about the smell of combined wee-wee and tea-tree oil either, mind you) and 2. That there's no research done to show what effect it has on very young children who wear it next to their skin more or less permanently for the first couple of years of their lives. (There may be no effect whatsoever - I'd just like to know that for sure.)

flamesparrow · 03/09/2005 18:02

I didn't like seeing the little crystals on my baby's skin and not knowing what was in it. Anything else you put near their skin you can find the ingredients - something glaringly missing from a nappy packet.
