Well my son is doing really well with his potty training only a few accidents. He starts nursery on wednesday.

The question i have is do you punish them (e.g. telling them they are naughty) if the have an accident. I think not and i explain to my son where it should go calmly.

My mother in law says i should say he is naughty but i don't agree.

any ideas?

i think most people wouldn't punish, nowadays. That said, I think it is what past generations did, and it is probably successful; explains how very early toilet training happens in some cultures, and why so many of "us" are told that we were out of nappies by 15-18 months.

I didn't personally, went for the 'Oh dear, what a shame' approach and really praised success.

Do what you think, not your m-i-l!!

Oh gosh, please don't punish him for having accidents, especially when he's doing so well. He's not naughty, he's just young and is still learning. I think the "Oh dear, never mind, perhaps you'll make it to the potty next time" approach is better, and lots of praise when they get it right.
