Does anyone know anything about University of London distance learning?

I'm about to start my second year with the OU. However I just read in the Guardian that UOL do the same thing and in fact it's cheaper than OU (although the don't have any financial aid so it depends I guess- I'm overseas so pay a fortune for OU).

I love OU, but at the same time there's certain amount of prejudice about them and having a degree from UOL perhaps would be more highly regarded by potential employers. If I were to do my BA in English there, my course would be prepared by Goldsmiths, which, AFAIK, is a very good college.

Any opinions? Thanks.

Prejudice against OU? I haven't encountered any.

What course are you taking?

I have some, peripheral, involvement with one of UEL's distance learning units.

Sorry, not UEL!!! University of London.

I'm working towards BA(Hons)Lit at the OU- I think at the UOL it would have to be BA English.

Winnybella. You don't have much time to complete your application. Goldsmiths has a good reputation for it's English degrees. I think you should be able to transfer your OU credits. Dr Sarah Barnsley is the Programme Director. If you go to the Goldsmiths website www.gold.ac.uk, you should be able to find her contact details.

Thanks, Slug.

I think I'll stay with the OU for this year, as I have already registered and am very excited about this course (19th Century Novel). I was thinking about possibly transfering next year. Or perhaps doing Masters with them. I'll give then a call and see what they say.

Just had a quickk look and they don't offer Masters in Eng./Lit..

Hmm.

winnybella - I'm also studying English Lit through the OU and earlier this year I also thought about changing to UoL. However, I think that you have less tutor support and that the study guides are not as comprehensive at UoL as they are at the OU. I could be wrong, but from my online research that is the impression I got. I decided to stay at the OU and possibly do my Masters through Birkbeck.

I'm doing a distance learning masters through SOAS (UoL) and its great - fantastic tutor support, great materials.

I suspect with UoL it depends on which site offers the course you want!

Ouamarusks- that was the impression that I got, as well. The reading list was much longer though- I always wondered about the fact that at the OU Eng Lit there aren't that many books to read, plus not that many courses to choose from.
But also the college -Goldsmiths- is hovering somewhere around 50th place in the uni tables, so it's hardly UCL iyswim.
