dealing with new baby's scratchy nails

First time mum here with one week old ds, not sure what to do. His nails are really scratchy - we've had scratch mitts on him all week but i know we can't do that forever! His nails seem way too tiny to cut or clip. My mw suggested i nibble them off but I've never bitten my own nails and don't feel confident to do that and his nails are so tiny i don't think i could do that.

What I'm wondering is, is it ok to gently file them? Or any other tips welcome :)

I nibbled both of mine here. You can get baby nail scissors and clippers which are OK.

bite them - they're really soft and you can't hurt him

whereas a file would be a bad idea because they're really soft

nail clippers / scissors not easy on one so small who likes fists - just a gentle chew

go on chew them off, it is by far the easiest way - or you could delegate to DP...

nibble !! your mouth is v v sensitive and you won't hurt your baby

i am still reeling from making 2 day old dd bleed by using the baby nail clippers. Blush Sad she's 5 now and it still makes me shudder

Yep - nibble away! They're very soft and easy to bite on, and you can be sure not to hurt his little fingers, as your mouth is sensitive enough to work out when you've only got nail and no flesh in your sights, which is a bit trickier with clippers, and much much trickier with scissors.

I chew or file my dd's :)

I find it difficult to bite my DS's nails (11 weeks) so use baby scissors when he's asleep, but you can't cut them low enough to not scratch at all.

I've always found nail clippers to be the best solution - but I have to wait until DD (3.5 months) is very fast asleep.

I'm good at clipping babies nails as I've had years of experience with my wriggly guinea pigs Grin.

nail file always worked for us.

thanks for the responses, I've filed them which worked pretty well. Might have a go at nibbling when he's a bit bigger
