How much do you spend on DCs for Christmas ?

I am really unsure what is a reasonable amount to spend on DCs for Christmas.

I think about £100 is reasonable per child ?
I know this may sound a lot to some but when you think that some toys are around the £40 mark plus you don't get much for your money.

I always had in the region of £100 spent on me as a child and that was 15ish years ago.

DH thinks that in the region of £50 is more reasonable but I worry that our two DCs will only get about 2 items for that amount.

Also they do get a few presents from other family and friends but the main bulk are from us. DH's parents look after DCs for one day per week so they keep all christmas presents that they give them at their house. My parents mainly give DCs money or clothing which is fine with me but does not exactly excite DCs.

By the way DCs are almost 3 and just turned 4.

I have twins, and spend around £50 each on a main present, but then they get a few extra little things, and of course their stockings...this year DC3 is due Dec 19th so all bets are off for next year!!

it varies

sometimes it's next to nothing, sometimes it's a lot.
it depends what they want

last year ds1 wanted a bike, so it was £160. this year he wants buzz lightyear, so it was £35

it doesn't matter how much you spend. your kids won't know. they don't need tons of presents to ahve a lovely christmas

Buy little things when you see them during the year, then they will have lots of cheap presents and one nice one on the day.

Whatever any one says, it will be reasonable to them but not to others.... incomes vary as you well know.

Spend what you think is reasonable.

I tried to stick to a budget last year but think I ended up spending £200 (he's 2yrs) It was too much, he got too much and didn't play with half of it. Am planning on going to poundland this year! Plus he got loads from relatives etc.

Meglet · 08/09/2010 21:33

About £20 / £30 each, they are 2 & almost 4.

And that will be a mix of second hand stuff and some cash in their bank account.

I am not adding to the clutter in this house.

Did I just fall asleep in September and wake up in November?

4plus1 · 08/09/2010 22:46

Its scary as dc get older the presents begin to get smaller but more expensive! Dsi, mobile phones, lap tops etc. My dc s do get spoiled rotten at christmas but they dont get toys bought during the year apart from birthdays. They only have a few xmases as kids so I go a bit mad

Rosebud05 · 09/09/2010 21:48

Yourcall, I was just wondering that! I've still got bare legs and people are preparing to deck the walls with the proverbial.

There is another thread about this, for which I wrote a very long reply... so won't repeat it all, but it depends on what you want to include.

I spend about £200 on mine, but then at least £50 will go on essentials that they will be getting anyway. Stuff like, vests, pants, slippers, nightdresses etc etc.

Then they get a couple of nice outfits so that's another £30 - £40 spent.

A couple of DS / Wii games - they're £20 each

and then some toys and stuff.

I spent about £150 on ds1 last year, he was nearly 3; ds2 was 6 months and I spent about £20 and gave him lots of stuff that ds1 had grown out of. It was too much to spend on ds1 and some of the stuff he is just starting to play with now.

This year I will probably spend about £70ish on ds1 and a bit less on ds2, simply because there is so much we already have in this house.

I don't know why people are making sniffy comments about the timing of this thread. If you need to spread the cost of Christmas a bit then it's no good waiting until November to start planning it.

BeckyBendyLegs · 11/09/2010 11:28

About £80-100 each which includes one 'main' present (about £30) and their FC stockings which don't seem to contain much but it soon adds up!

But I won't be thinking about Christmas until the end of November. Too early!!!!

BeckyBendyLegs · 11/09/2010 11:29

PS I'm not being sniffy. I'm just not organized. Hats off to people who are!!!
