when did you stop cutting up their food?

I usually cut my DD so it cools down more easily. She was 4 yesterday.

I do sometimes give her a knife, but I think I just cut it up out of habit (and so it cools quicker)

What age did you stop?

DS1 is 12.5. The other day I found myself cutting up his food

Depends what the meal is . Sometimes I'll still cut up our 7 yr old's food but definitely usually for our just-4 dd.

My DH was laughing at me for asking such a daft question!!!!

Just thought I would see what others did!!!!

I still cut up things for ds1 who is 4.5 and starting school next week!! He can sort of do it himself but when I'm dishing out dinner it's just easier to chop his as well as ds2's (2)

fqueenzebra · 01/09/2005 21:27

Still don't bother giving DS1 (coming up to 6yo) a knife at mealtimes.
I think the more people tsktsk about children not able to eat with a KNIFE and fork, I want my child to be the token 12yo who can't do it.

Who me? Contrary? Neah....

LOL Zebra!

I still cut things up for ds1(5) as he still can't seem to manage it yet.

crazydazy · 01/09/2005 21:43

I still cut DD's up and she is 5!!! I just do it because I am doing it for DS (3) I suppose really I should give her a knife one day and just see if she will do it herself.

Codsdh · 01/09/2005 22:50

Those of you who do it for 5 yr olds - how do they manage at school?

Just interested as ds1 starts next week and I'm wondering how he'll manage!!

fqueenzebra · 01/09/2005 22:55

I am pretty sure that hot dinners they do not give them things that need cutting up. So they wouldn't get a whole piece of chicken, or a complete rubbery yorkshire pudding crust. Otherwise DS1 takes packed lunches, so am not too sure.

I think DS1 can use a knife, I just can't be bothered do deal with the splatters on my carpet.

coppertop · 01/09/2005 23:01

Ds1 takes a packed lunch to school. His fine motor skills were delayed. At 3.5yrs he had the fine motor skills of an 18mth -old toddler. He's catching up but still doesn't have a lot of strength in his hands/wrists.

Gobbledigook · 01/09/2005 23:03

B*cks - blown my cover!

I'm rubbish at this incognito stuff!!

Gobbledigook · 01/09/2005 23:04

Thanks for responses to question. I think ds1 will manage - I've seen him attempt cutting even with the side of his fork so he'll do OK I hope!

DD is 9 next month and when I serve her certain meals i still cut up her food before I give to her, mainly only the meat. This is more because i get frustrated watching her cut up a chop etc. SO I do it.

Oh and also because I dont want her to grow up anymore.
