school run with a baby?

Hi just a silly question.
How do you do the school run if the baby is sick/ill?
We don't have any familly or freinds around or even neighbourgs who can take care of a baby at last minute notice at 7 am.
Do you take the sick baby to school? (40 min walk or 30 min in the subway? if really bad could take a taxi) or you do not take the eldest to school? Confused
My instinct is to keep the baby inside and in bed, but then I would be a bit Blush to tell the school that the yougest is ill so I can't take DD1 to school today.
Sorry must have a baby brain freeze Grin

Do you have a partner who can take your DD1? Or can any mummy friends from schol pick up your dd on the way?

mookle · 07/09/2010 07:51

How old is DD1? If old enough could you consider ordering a taxi to pick DD up? I know some mums who have done that before. If not I'd just keep them at home

DD1 is 5.5.
only 15 pupils in school and her freind would have to make a detour to come to us.
Riven Yes that what I thought but walking, that would be 3h outside in the pram with a fever, it is not good is it? And you wouldn't take the subway, isn't it?
DH could do the mornings if not on site.
I think I am just thinking aloud Wink
I need to learn to ask for help when needed! I would be time at 41! re Blush

I do not have a car. I currently have a sick baby who I took to GP yesterday and back to today for follow up. His temp was 40 at one point.

I put him in long pants, long sleeves, socks, shoes and his fleece, put him in his pram with rain cover down and away we went.

The fresh, cool air actually brought his temp down.

Sometimes you have no choice. Just take the baby.

thisisyesterday · 07/09/2010 08:14

you just have to do it. snug baby up in the pram and take your eldest to school. baby will be fine

sorrento56 · 07/09/2010 08:16

You wrap the baby up and take them.

messylittlemonkey · 07/09/2010 09:39

I was wondering similar.

Dd1 just started school and we have a 6mo baby. The baby isn't ill, but it did cross my mind the other day - what do you do if she is ill and DD1 needs to get to school?

I think I'd just take the baby or ask a friend.

kittyonthebeam · 07/09/2010 11:51

Could you order Addison Lee to take them? IMO, it's a good company and worthwhile the expense. Just get an account set up opr pay cash. Really easy.

mamaloco · 08/09/2010 06:47

Kitty I don't understand your email??
No spare cash. Otherwise I would have had a student like last year to pick up DD1, she did some morning too when DD2 was born by CS.
Basically, it is just me, my legs, my brain (when not on strike Hmm) and generosity of freinds (when I dare ask).

you take the baby with you, fresh air will prob bring temp down

RememberToPlaywiththeKids · 08/09/2010 19:53

It's worse when you're on your own and the older one is sick and you need to get the little one to school. Bigger ones can't go in a pram!

mixedmamameansbusiness · 09/09/2010 14:11

Will watch with interest as am due with DC3 in march and will need to take the other two angels to school and nursery. I imagine I will just pack baby and pushchair and take them, but I am anal about school attendance. Plus I am 10-15 mins which is quite different to 40 min.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 09/09/2010 14:13

I have just wrapped DD up tight and bunged her in the pram before. But I have the benefit of living very close to the nursery.
If any further and didnt have my car I would take a taxi.

mamaloco · 10/09/2010 07:04

You can put the older one in bed or in front of the TV and ask a neighbourg to look after (I have plenty of old ones at home all day), no work involved. It is another story to leave the baby with someone.
I put DD1 in the pram when sick to go emergency shopping or the doc untill she was past 3.5 (size of a 5 yo though), I had a lot of Hmm faces on the way, but tough no choice. Not more than 20 min trips though, well, 40 min round trip, not 2x 1h30.
I calculated on google earth the distance to the school is 3.5 Km so it adds up for me to 14 km to do the school run walking all the way.

I guess taxi it is. What about the shame of contaminating the taxi driver? Hmm Blush.
Finger crossed it doesn't happen to often.

I have had a similar issue but it is when I am ill. I have arthritis so have been to stiff to take my Daugherty to school with a small baby as well. Thinks I have done (wont help op but might help someone else) crossed my dd1 over the road and watched her down to the lolly lady . Got a friend to pick her up. Got dh to go in a bit late and drop her at breakfast club.

Now the little one has started school it could be tricky as couldn't get my big one to take my little one but I now know more people who could help
