Lucky you mumtosomeone, but think that if that's not happening, it's not a bad idea to try some of the other ideas. They've worked for me and mine has slept 7 to 6:30ish from 12 weeks as well as napping 3 to 4 hours a day.

Another thought Blossom2. My dd has mild reflux at that stage and I was advised to prop her up slightly in bed so that she didn't lie completely flat. This also seemed to help. Apparently the reflux is at its worst in the evening. Does she bring up much milk?

is it luck?

Probably a combination of factors.

mumtosomeone · 01/09/2005 15:59

Well I am lucky to have been so lucky!!

Best advice I can give is relax and enjoy your baby. Dont try and be super women, everything takes time. The less stressed you are the more relaxed your baby will be and if strict routine suits you use it, I prefer to be flexable as my lifestyle is flexable. If I want or need to go out I dont want to have to look at the clock to see when baby is due a nap etc!

blossom2 · 01/09/2005 18:17

thank you all very much for your advice ...

i've devised a routine that should hopefully work for DD2 and DD1 (who starts school tomorrow) based on baby whispher's 3 hour routine... lots of work for me though.... means that DD2 would not get more than 5 hrs sleep during the day... does sound reasonable??

trying it tomorrow so will let you know how it goes...wish me luck

Sounds more than enough. DD never had more than 4, spread over 3 naps.

dinny · 01/09/2005 22:00

I put ds into a Karri-Me sling and he dropped off while I out dd to bed. Was a nightmare otherwise.

mumtosomeone · 02/09/2005 07:25

try to settle baby first. a few days of doing the bedtimes and it will fall into place

blossom2 · 02/09/2005 07:31

first day of waking up at 7.00am for us and so far she has gone down for her nap okay ... keep your fingers crossed for me... i have my sling on standby ....

got up at 7 and gone back for a nap?

blossom2 · 02/09/2005 07:37

she gets tired about 1 hr after she wakes up. if i dont put her down she falls asleep on me. i've tried putting her on her babygym, chair, DD1 talking to her but she just moans. she gets over tired and then i cant get her to sleep... she's waking up now from a 45min sleep ...

what are your thoughts?? should i keep her up for longer??

just think it might be a continuation of her sleep rather than a nap!!
Did you wake her at 7?

she woke about 6.45am so she fed & changed etc. so she woke at 8.30am, but then went back to sleep at 9.30am with the help of a dummy & sling (had to take DD1 to school then - first day). she woke at 10.00am and she's had a good feed. we're going to keep her awake until 11.30am (hopefully) then have her sleep in the sling whilst we have lunch somewhere....

so what an awful evening and interesting day...

DD2 seems to only be able to sleep for a max of 1 hour (whether in the sling, in her cot or in the buggy), likes to fall asleep on me. She can only stay awake for 1 hr at a time, max 1.5 hrs.

this evening, she had a bath and then a bottle (only took 1oz) and fell asleep for 45 mins. we then gave her the rest of her bottle (only 2oz). i then swaddled her and put her in her cot (she was yawning). i also put DD1 to bed and had to let DD2 cry for about 15 mins at one point. I feel terrrible adn she screamed the house down. I have done some kind of sleep training and used a dummy and i'm hoping she's sleep now.

BUT i feel awful really really bad about what i've done (the sleep training). i know its probably too young but at the same time, i want my evenings back, time to spend with DD1 (who has babdly scratched the TV) and time with DH.

Any tips/ideas/suggestions on how i can make this easier, or will it just get better with time??

I sleep trained DD1 when she was about 3 months...

Oh Blossom, it won't last. I can totally relate to how frustrated you are right now, but really honestly think that you may feel happier if you accept a/this is what your baby needs right now
and
b/it won't last
I have had no routine at all with dd (six months) and yes, at 8 weeks she was up until 11pm very often. But she's gradually got earlier and earlier and tonight she fell fast asleep at 7pm.

blossom2 · 02/09/2005 20:59

i feel so bad. she woke up about 20mins ago and i fed her 3oz of EBM and she seems to have fallen back to sleep...

i am now crying my eyes out ... Dh out for the evening... actually its easier without him because i dont feel i need to rush & have dinner with him or anything.... i can just concentrate on DD2 ... i'm going mad...

Ah, don't cry, sometimes when you have two something has to give. I remember a friend with three admitting that she had to let the baby cry sometimes just to get out of the house etc - he's a VERY happy and confident little chap of seven now. These early days and months can be very hard. I do honestly believe that forgetting the clock altogether has saved my sanity with my dd. She doesn't even now sleep for that long, very, very rarely sleeps in her cot during the day etc, but I refuse to clock watch or worry. Ds loves her very much and even though I would love more one on one time with him, I honestly think the pleasure he gets out of a sibling more than makes up for that loss and we do what we can. Eg the other day when dd was about to get tired I popped her in the pram and took her and ds to the park - she fell asleep on the way so we sat on the grass and chatted, read his Balamory comic to him, found a balloon in my bag (typical mother, eh?) and he had huge fun chasing it when I blew it up and let it go. He also made friends with a couple of dogs. Then dd woke up so we went to the swings and she watched him in fascination.
Things really will get easier. I don't seem to make 'routiney' children (I'm very disorganised and unroutiney myself tbh) and you can't do much about that so I believe I'm less stressed for going with it rather than fighting it.
And now she's six months she is so much more predicatable and goes to sleep at a proper bedtime. It's been a slowish process but she's been asleep by 9pm for AGES now, and for the last few nights has been nodding off between 7pm and 8pm.
Cut yourself some slack - it isn't easy and you are doing your best.
