What is more effective than sudocrem for very bad nappy rash?

DS has shocking nappy rash. My DCs have never had it particularly bad, and sudocrem has always sorted it out. However, DS (17m) has now developed really bad nappy rash, not helped by the fact that he keeps doing small poos every hour or so, so we have regular nightmare nappy changes, where he is writhing in pain, and his bottom is quite raw IYSWIM.

Have realised that the sudocrem doesn't seem to be doing much, and am having a pre-bank-holiday 'no GP surgery for 3 days' panic.

Any suggestions of something else I can get from the pharmacy without having to see the GP. Have been advised by the stroppy receptionist that there are no appts.

i'd show the pharmacist and ask their opinion

flimflammum · 27/08/2010 16:33

Yes, get some Metanium, much better than sudocrem or anything else if DC has nappy rash badly, IME.

Metanium

I used zinc and castor oil cream from Boots and found it worked better than sudocrem. Mine rarely had nappy rash and I used to put cream on at each nappy change as a preventive measure.

wahwahwah · 27/08/2010 16:35

I used bepanthem (check spelling). Very good.

I have also used it... ok here it comes... when my backside way very sore with piles. Sorry if I put anyone off their tea.

nagoo · 27/08/2010 16:36

bepanthen worked for us.

And lots of bare arse time Grin

nagoo · 27/08/2010 16:36

aah, I se from the small poos that might not be a good idea Hmm

LackingInspiration · 27/08/2010 16:38

Wipe his bum with soft cotton wipes soaked in a honey and chamomile tea solution; and then put weleda nappy cream on it. In four children, I have never had a nappy rash that has not been solved very quickly with this combination.

TigerFeet · 27/08/2010 16:38

metanium

if that doesn't work then you'll need something antifungal from the GP next week

my GP says that he swears by metanium and will only prescribe something stronger if that hasn't worked

mathanxiety · 27/08/2010 16:40

A & D ointment (it's vitamin A and D in a basically fish oil medium) if you can find any.

If it's really bad, it might be something else though -- DS once needed antibacterial ointment as he got a fungal infection that then got infected.

TigerFeet · 27/08/2010 16:42

be careful with metanium though, it stains and it's a bugger to get out

inveteratenamechanger · 27/08/2010 16:45

bepanthen - and don't use wipes. Use cotton wool and water instead. Much less stingy.

colditz · 27/08/2010 16:48

Metanium is the best I've ever used.

is1 · 27/08/2010 16:49

Metanium is definitely the best - but yes it does stain clothes so be careful

itsatiggerday · 27/08/2010 16:51

I found bepanthen better than metanium and a lot less messy. And second cotton wool and water rather than wipes. If it's warm enough where you are, nothing beats lying him on a towel outside for some bare bottom kicking and just accepting you'll be washing the towel!

PANCHEY · 27/08/2010 16:52

Metanium - the only thing that works - as everyone else has said it stains though.

silver28 · 27/08/2010 16:52

metanium

MyMamaToldMe · 27/08/2010 16:56

Another bepanthem fan here.

Fluteyboots · 27/08/2010 16:56

I use bepanthen as a preventative, keeps skin lovely but not so good at treating it I found. For bare botty time i got some disposable change mats, or In the garden.

wahwah ooh, did it work?

Kathyjelly · 27/08/2010 16:56

Zinc and castor oil cream (tescos or boots) and a tablespoon of cooking salt in the bath water.

follygirl · 27/08/2010 17:05

I used metanium when it was bad but zinc and castor oil cream after each nappy change.

undercovamutha · 27/08/2010 20:09

Thanks for the advice everyone. In the end, I thought it was so bad (DS was in agony) that I phoned the GP again and managed to get an appointment. Good job too, as GP said it was quite bad, and prescribed a cream.

As metanium has had such a good review here, I will have to pick some up for the future. Smile

We always used metanium - excellent!

lollymad · 27/08/2010 20:13

I've recently started using Lush Dream Cream on ds eczema, and it has also cleared his nappy rash. Flippin 'spensive, but worth it!

pozzled · 27/08/2010 20:14

Yep, I put sudocrem on if it's a little red but swear by metanium for anything that's really sore. The only time it didn't work was when DD had a fungal infection.
