How much pocket money in Y7 (age 11)?

DS1 is going to Y&, and I was thinking maybe it was time to give him some pocket money.

He has earned money for jobs around the house (car cleaning etc) but I think a regular income would be more useful all round.

So should I just hand it out with out conditions? And if so how much?

I was thinking of giving £5 per week, to be docked if he doesn't do his homework/gets a detention at school (which will mean I have to do a 26 mile round trip with 2 younger DC rather than him catch the bus).

What do other people do?

Hi Lynette Smile
I give half their age so my y7 gets £5.50 (if I remember!)

What do want him to use the pocket money for? What will he be expected to pay out out of it? My young teen gets £10 pw (often docked for various reasons) but she's expected to but all her tat, cinema tickets, bus/train fares for social reasons etc with it

My DS1 (going into Yr9) gets £5 per week.

We buy everything for him like pens for school, clothes etc.

My 11 yr old (yr 7) gets £15 a month and my 14 yr old (yr 9) gets £20 a month. It works well.

I never dock it.

I get them 'essential' clothes like school stuff and some shoes and new trousers if they have outgrown all their trousers.

They go up town with their friends and buy fashion clothes and accessories and the odd cinema trip.

I give DS1 his bus fare when he goes into town from here - we live in a village and expensive to get the bus.

LynetteScavo · 26/08/2010 20:37

I would buy him everything essential, but if he wanted to modify his scooter, or buy games for his DSi he could without waiting for Christmas (his B'day is in January)

Is it mean to dock pocket money?

I don't think it's mean, if everyone knows the score. I just wouldn't choose to do that as a punishment. But then the dds are v compliant Wink

LynetteScavo · 26/08/2010 20:55

I don't normally punish..apart from moaning on and on (so I'm told). Should I not punish for not doing homework?

The school will punish for not doing homework.
Ds is getting £15 a month, but does get his phone topped up.
He only buys Lynx deoderant and the odd football comic.
