Help! Bambinex Bamboo leaks "skinny" 7 week old preemie

DS is approx 9-10 lbs (HV weigh-in next monday). He was 3.5 weeks premature and has always been long and slim.

He was in Pampers newborn to start with as they were the only thing which fitted and didn't leak!

I'm trying to persevere with my Bambinex bundle size 1 (bought new) but OH's patience is wearing thing with the leaks from the legs - every nappy change (3 hours max) reveals soaking clothes + mattress/chair/whatever. :(

I'm having the waistband quite high up trying to make the legs less gappy - although they always seem to have a gap. He looks like the Simon Cowell of the washable nappy world. :(

Am using the standard Bambinex wrap.

Does anyone have any advice? I keep reading about how brilliant these nappies are - but I'm not doing so well right now.

Is my PFB the wrong shape? Wink

No I don't think so Smile. I'd personally invest in some small sized motherease wraps - they work much better than anything I've tried and would keep the wet in better. You could try boosting if the nappy is wet all the way through or even changing a little more often. My dts were prem and it used to astound me how wet the nappies would get after 3 hours - at this age lots of feeding = lots of wee though. I think the bambinex nappies are generally good though and with the right wrap they could be all you need.

CarGirl · 23/08/2010 14:53

are they nippa our velcro?

I too would recommend motherease air flow wraps.

Is it possible that the nappies are on too tight so the wee is being forced out the sides or is the nappy sodden and needing to be changed more frequently.

It also takes 3 washes and dried to get the nappies to maximum absorbancy.

Here's an old wives tale from 10 years ago, and yes it DOES work for pretty much any nappy:

Put it on inside out.

Then fold the front and back over outwards, so you then have the 'right' side of the fastening both the correct way up and correct way out to do up, but over a smaller nappy that's going to fit round the legs and in height better but is a little bulkier at the waist. If the fastenings are still too slack, skip a popper on the double poppers to gather it in more, or if velcro just overlap the tabs more and secure with a nappi nippa or a pin

Try with the wraps you have - once you've stemmed the leaks from the nappy you won't have such a leaky wrap problem, and see how you get on - but you might prefer the fit of the XS Motheerease OR try a newborn Stacinator So Simple - this has fleecy leg cuffs and goes on more like shorts, has no elastic so you can upt it right hight up over the rib cage without any risk of marks.

I'd definitely invest in some different wraps, I didn't get on with the Bambinex wraps at all. I prefer the Motherease Rikki wrap for newborns.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 23/08/2010 15:53

Thank you for all your words. I'm going to try the nappy inside out and if that helps then I'll know I'm on the right track and will go ahead and get some Motherease wraps.

I don't think they're too tight - well I've been hoiking them up above his waist and they seem "gappy" around his thighs - skinny legs. Confused (alas not from me!) I can't see how they could be tight on him as they're so baggy.

They are indeed very wet - so I'll try an extra booster (have tried before) and see how we get on.

I've got some used motherease airflow wraps going cheap if you're interested.

I found it best to put the booster between the nappy and wrap when they were little it seemed to give a better fit IYSWIM.

Those chicken legs will soon fill out!

SkiHorseWonAWean · 23/08/2010 18:24

Yes definitely! Only problem is I'm in europe so only have dodgy euros, not shiny pound coins Wink. If we can work something out, please drop me a line on aberystwyth at hotmail dot com. :)

will do later, off to nit comb - yuck!

They do need a number of washes before they reach full absorbency - about 6 or so I seem to remember. Do NOT use fabric conditioner in the wash as it will waterproof them! If they are very wet then you'll just have to change more often. Airflow wraps are the business.

If you have Nippas then you can try folding down the front instead of hoiking it up, then securing with the Nippa (this is the method I used from newborn but with the size 2 nappies). Even if they are popper nappies you should be able to fold down and nippa, not sure about Aplix.

If you can't make them work and want to wait until he fills out a bit more then how about using folded muslins + nippas in the early days. They are cheap and cheerful, wash and dry well, can be boosted, variety of folds to suit different babies (recommend bat fold) and can be used with most wraps. And they can convert to burp cloths/wipes once their nappy days are over.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 23/08/2010 20:02

They've been washed around 6 times already so I don't think it's that. What do you mean by "nippa"?

mumface · 23/08/2010 20:07

Nappynippas

SkiHorseWonAWean · 24/08/2010 08:03

Ariela - bloody genius about inside out and folded down! Grin How is it sometimes that we cannot see the obvious staring us in the face? OK, it's only been on him 15 minutes but it was so obviously a better fit - more disposable size 1 shaped rather than Simon Cowell-esque harem pants style! Wink

I will find out in an hour or so how this is working out leaks wise but I'm hopeful.

OP posts:
CarGirl · 24/08/2010 18:32

I only ever used nippa nappies so always folded them down IYSWIM Grin hope they work on the leak front.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 24/08/2010 19:40

Wow! Thought I'd give you all an update - what a successful day! I was a bit paranoid and changed the first one really quickly - no leaks. Next one, no leaks. Had to go out to the stables - 3 hours and I didn't want to touch him with my manky horsey hands to change the nappy - got home, no leaks! You get the picture... Grin

I'm very, very happy with this inside-out/folded-down method - I was almost ready to consign them to a carrier bag at the bottom of the wardrobe and put it down to an expensive mistake - so obviously I'm absolutely thrilled that I'm going to be able to get good use out of them. :) :) Thank you, thank you thank you!

I have never used Bambinex Bamboo nappies, but I had a set of Bambinex Easy COmfort nappies that were so leaky I got my money back!

CharlottesClan · 25/08/2010 19:28

brilliant idea about putting them on inside out! genius!

so glad you are getting on better with them. :)

Ariela · 26/08/2010 13:28

SkiHorse am am very pleased for you - 'tis the old remedies work the best! And best of all the cost to you is nothing more!

If you need to add a booster, experiment with inside the nappy BUT this might push the elastic away from the legs, so also try between the nappy and the wrap - this would IMO probably be better, as it'll push the nappy closer to him = more likely to soak into nappy = less likely to leak onto the wrap

Back in the olden days when my daughter was a skinny newborn NOTHING fitted worked without (there was not a lot of choice in 1999!), and even disposables had to be sellotaped tighter at the legs.

Mind you she's still skinny and long legs: at just 11 she's already over 5ft2 - she rides too, outgrew an 11.2 last year, rapidly outgrowing a 13.2 this year....
