can I give calpol to 9 week old?

9 week old DD2 has a cold Sad Really snotty and miserable.

Can I give her calpol? And if so can I give it every 4 hours as I would with DD1? I know they can have 2.5 ml after their 1st jabs, but is that just a one-off? Bottle says from 3 months but also says it can be used for fever after vaccinations at 2 months, so I am confused.

Thanks!

How confusing. I was under the impression you could give it to them at 8 weeks regardless of vac's. I've just looked at my bottle- calpol sugarfree says 2 months plus. Second dose after 4-6 hours. If your not sure maybe go to a pharmacy or ring nhs direct? Sorry i dont think i've been that helpful. Hope your little one feels better soon. A nasal aspirator might help with the snot too.

i wouldn't give her regular doses, no. a one off dose, yes.

You can give 2 x 2.5 ml doses at 2 months. 4 to 6 hours apart. After that it advises you to see a doctor.

That is strange, the bottle i have says 2 months + (so long as they are over 4kg) It's just the bog standard paracetamol calpol.

Have you got the ibruprofen one? Because that is from 3 months but has a line about after vacs.

MrsBadger · 21/08/2010 17:40

calpol is a painkiller and fever reducer

it won't help a cold

try snufflebabe (like Vick's Vaporub for babies), raising head of cot, plug-in eucalyptus diffusers etc

don't dose her

thanks for the advice - gave her 2.5 ml this morning which seemed to settle her, certainly helped her sleep. It is the boots own I have and it says from 3 months Confused

it's more that she is bunged up and chesty than having a fever, so i think mrsbadger is right, i've got some olbas oil, reckon that might be alright on her bedding to help clear her out a bit... might ring HV in morning if she's no better.

thanks all!

DS had his first cold at this age too, was misrable for both me and him so you have my sympathy......
I did give calpol at night as he had tiny bit of temperature but what worked best for his bunged-up-ness was olbas on a muslin at the end of his cot, plus a Karvol plug in thing (his room was SUPER fresh smelling!!!!), hope your lo gets well soon :o

Squeezy - we gave infant panadol to DD1 from three days old. (she had an operation to fix her bowel). They supplied it to us in hospital, and then we used it every six hours for a good week.

Obviously with normal cold/flu type pain you don't want to be dosing her continually. But a one off dose should be fine really.

Have you asked your GP/HV what they think?

You can also buy baby vicks and pop it on their vest. And the diffusers are good.

good luck.
