Leaking Bambinex Teddies on 7 m.o.

My 7.5 m.o. DS wears Bambinex Teddies in the day but has had a lot of leaks recently - at least once a day. He weighs around 22lbs ish (99th centile baby) and has been in the large size for probably a couple of months. I use the boosters that come with the nappies, and put them at the front of the nappy. We use fleece liners and Airflow wraps (large size - again, he's been in these for a good couple of months).

The leaks seem to be coming out of the side of the nappy, not the top. I wondered whether it was because his clothes are tight (getting dungarees to fit round the nappy is a bit of a challenge) but then we had a leak with his very generously cut Frugi dungarees. Confused

I change his nappy every couple of hours. Today it leaked during a nap and less than an hour after the clean nappy went on his clothes & sleeping bag were soaked. The nappy was pretty wet too.

We've not had any problems with leaking at night, when he wears Motherease one-size nappies and Airflow wraps. I'm less keen on ME though, and mine tend to whiff a bit (they were second hand) so I'd rather not use them during the day.

We had a similar problem a few weeks ago when I started using new liners. I put him back into the small size, but they were too small. Then I realised I'd not pre-washed the fleece liners and doing that sorted the problem out.

Any suggestions?

Were your wraps new or second hand? My older wraps started to wick at the elastic round the legs so I bought new ones and have had no problems since. It is possible that tight fitting clothes would cause leaks but doesn't sound like this is the main problem if you still had a leak when he was wearing his Frugi clothes?

For stinky nappies, try stripping them - worked for me. Just wash them without detergent until no suds come out. Alternatively, a wash with a little bio washing powder might do the trick.

Just to add - if he's a heavy wetter you might be better off with a bamboo nappy. Microfibre is great as it dries super quickly and is very soft but it is way less absorbent than bamboo or hemp.

Thanks, ziggyf. Most of my wraps were second hand so that might be the problem. I wonder whether the incident while in his Frugi clothes was a one-off but perhaps the others were due to tight clothes.

At the moment I'm adding a Motherease booster if we're going out or he's having a nap, which seems to be helping. I might look into bamboo. I do like the way microfibre is so fast drying, though.

Sadly I tried washing with bio and strip washing (many many times) - the smell improved but didn't disappear.

The problem sounds like it's the wrap, not the nappy. Second hand wraps can have been used on several babies and they unfortunately do degrade. I would recommend buying a new wrap (I love Mother-ease myself) and seeing if it solves the problem. You could also try popping a bamboo booster into the nappy if you find it gets soaked which will also help and they're fairly cheap to get a few of.

The boosters in a Bambinex aren't really an additional booster - they're the equivalent of a normal soaker, say the fold-out type you get in a Tots Bots for instance. There are several advantages of the loose booster, for instance:

  • you can remove it for a little baby who needs a lot less in the nappy, making it slimmer
  • if you have several Bambinex nappies you can use boosters from nappies you're not using to boost other nappies
  • you can turn the nappy inside out and fold down the front and back for a lower rise fit and put the booster back in the correct side.

With your mother-ease nappies, have you tried washing them with some white malt vinegar in the rinse cycle? DO NOT run any wraps through with this wash as the vinegar can degrade the PUL.

Definitely the secondhand wraps - most babies will go into the large size around the same age as your son, and carry on for a year or more in them, as they slim down a bit on walking, then get taller, plus all that up and own on the bottom all day = lots of wear and tear.
