My mum's grandparenting drives me nuts

And I feel so guilty about it. Is this normal? I understand the urge to spoil ds, but it's so unhelpful- has she forgotten what it's like to be the parent? I realise that I sound ungrateful, I am lucky to have a DM who is interested and involved and yet.....she's driving me BONKERS!

Why Staines, what is she doing?

Tee2072 · 19/08/2010 18:21

What exactly is she doing?

EdgarAllenPop · 19/08/2010 18:25

i would think from the number of DM/ Mil threads on here it's perfectly normal for GPs tp drive their GCs mothers maaad

If it helps any, my mum and dad act and treat their grandchildren so differently to how I remember them treating me.

Again, as long as what my parents do is legal safe and not really against the grain I leave it. I just factor in the fact that the relationship is such a fleeting one in the grand scheme of things....

It sounds so petty, I hate to write it down. She's just looked after him for two days as our cm is on hols.
So. Cake for tea yesterday. Nothing else offered. Just cake.
He's been carried everywhere, which I've mentioned that I'm trying to avoid (20 month ds, 6 mth pg Staines) so ofcourse now he's expecting me to continue.
But I think the thing that gets to me most is that she tries to jolly him out of every momentary sulk - which actually resulted in a couple of meltdowns today. I prefer to ignore and he gets over it really quickly.

God. I'm a cow.

You probably are being a teensy bit unreasonable but your pregnant so I guess you're allowed.

If it help my dad gave my ds's a massive victoria sponge cake for breakfast the last time he came to stay. But I figured it was a small price to pay for a lie in!

Kids are pretty adaptive and mine soon learnt that what happens with grandad doesn't happen with mum!

Have also just re read and realise how pfb it sounds.

No you're not!! It is difficult when the gps indulge their grandchildren (my mum was the full time entertainer) and then having to revert to how it should be ...Smile

stainesmassif · 19/08/2010 18:45

Yes, I remember my gran being way more fun than my mum, and eating lots of cake at her house....interesting!

My mum is ridiculously over-indulgent with DS too, and it does annoy me sometimes. I think GPs just think it's a right that, having had the hard parenting work disciplining us etc they should get to spoil their GCs rotten. It's nice in a way. But I do feel your pain.

seaturtle · 20/08/2010 22:18

I used to get annoyed with what appeared to be my mum and dads' spoiling of now 2yr old DS until I sounded off to my aunties (dad's sisters) who reassured me that spoiling is what GP's do. One of them admits to piling one of her granddaughters with creamy cakes and Disney Store goodies every Friday. My cousin is OK with this. It's called Granny's Rules which are different from Mummy's Rules.

stainesmassif · 20/08/2010 22:38

Mmmmmm I've thought about it quite a lot since I posted. I guess once your babies grow up you must miss them (I anticipate that i will- a lot). So I guess when you get your hands on another one you just want all of the fun and none of the tears. Am still irritated by the jollying along tho. It's ok for him to be a little bit pissed off occasionally!

I get annoyed with my mum, she feeds my kids sooo much sugary rubbish, they don't eat any proper food when we're staying with her because they know that eventually Granny will give them a cookie/ some cake/ a chocolate mousse. Then she gets really stressed and shouty when they go hyper and silly due to the sugar rush. And wonders why I'm practically in tears at bedtime after picking up the pieces all day long and trying to get 2 sugar-crazed little boys to bed. It's actually spoiling the close relationship I have with my mum - she's like my best friend but visiting her has become something I dread.
