Do washable nappies leave grey gunk in washing machines?

Perhaps a strange question, but I've been using washables since DS was born (he's now 7 months), and in the last couple of months I've noticed that our other clothes are picking up grey / brown stains in the washing machine, which kind of defeats the object.
A friend of mine said she had read that washable nappies cause that and there is a solution, but she can't remember what! Any ideas anyone?

nah, but it could be build up of detergents or something. run a hot wash through (no clothes) to clean the machine.

never noticed it and have been using reuseables for two years.... Try putting your machine through a maintenance wash, see if it cleans it out properly.

Good idea, will try a hot wash to see if that cleans it out, thanks.

No poo in the machine giraffeski, unless DH has not been following instructions

Hi Girrafeski, no... I can't see an option to just do a rinse on my machine. I guess I could set it to do a "prewash" (but with no clothes in), but it would get a bit pricey doing that after every wash I would have thought?

I have a filter in the top of my agitator ( top loader) and it getsgrey gunky when there is a build up of powder and left over rinse aid. I have never had that with the nappies. I would do as others have suggested and run a hot wash with nothing - maybe just a little white vinegar to clean it out.

I have to lift the filter out and give it a scrub. But since swapping over to liquid detergent - no more!!

sounds more like build up of detergent.... rather than washing nappies

how much do you use...

i find that clotehs get beutifully clean with only about 1/3 of what the manufacturers recommend.

and unles i was washing filthy pe kits wouldnt dream of using 2 tablets!

Im sure they do it to make us all by more powder!
