Would you have reacted the same way, or am I just weird?

This is something that happened four years ago, when dd1 was only about six weeks old. I took the bus into town. When I wanted to go home the driver said I needed to collapse the pram. I was struggling to do that while holding dd1 at the same time. A nice old lady came up to me and offered to hold dd1 while I collapsed the pram. I accepted the offer - she then took dd1 and walked into the bus with her in her arm. I totally freaked out, ran after her and took dd1 off her again. I had thought she wanted to hold her while standing next to me. The old lady was totally offended . Now, years later, I do think I overreacted a bit, but in my early babycrazy days I felt so physically attached to her that I couldn't help myself.

Not wierd at all IMO, I'd have done exactly the same - at that age it's like the umbilical cord is still there joining you!

HellyBelly · 26/08/2005 20:36

I'm sure this lady was just wanting to help but can understand why you reacted that way as you have to be more careful these days AND, your hormones would probably have still been all over the place.

I wouldn't worry about it, well in the past!

Blu · 26/08/2005 20:36

No, I don't think I would have reacted like that - but it's easy for me to say that now. In reality, within 6 weeks of birth, I might have reacted like anything at all, with no reference to rational expectations at all!

Why is this troubling you now, Emkana?

Oh not odd at all. If someone now offered to hold ds's hand while I folded the buggy and walked down the bus with him, I would grab him straight back.

suzyfloozypuddingandpie · 26/08/2005 20:38

I would probably have refused the help. I'm awkward like that.

Blu · 26/08/2005 20:39

But why, if he was happy to go? If they're going ON to the bus?

emkana · 26/08/2005 20:41

It's not really troubling me, I just remembered it now because of the other thread about the practice nurse who took the little boy out.

You couldn't help your visceral response. I remember FIL coming in to my house to meet dd for the first time when she was about 3-4 days old. He took her from my arms in a clumsy way and I ran upstairs and cried. My head was swirling with emotion. It caused a bit of a stir.

When you've just had a baby you're in a vulnerable emotional state and the art of logic and reasons takes a back seat for a while. It can take you by suyrprise as you don't feel 'yourself'.

I think it's a wildly protective instinct which is there for a reason. You couldn't help it. Sometimes we forget we're animals.

I think its awful..that poor lady, she probably sobbed for days after. Her Daughter had just fallen out with her and she couldnt see her grand children anymore and there was this poor women struggling and she thought she would help..whats more she was a millionairess and wanted to leave you her dosh, now its all gone to the cats home, cos she died of a broken heart!

Grin
EvesMama · 26/08/2005 20:45

as a mum = totally natural response
as a woman who miraculously forgot what being a mum was like = got a cob on...who cares about her..old bag..would she have let you walk off holding her life savings whilst she got on bus?????

Wallace · 26/08/2005 20:51

Probably would have felt the same, but not done anything about it...

I used to hate it when mine were tiny babies, and my friends would jokingly say things like "I'm going to take you home with me, and you can be my baby" I wanted to howl and scream, and grab my baby away from them

mumtosomeone · 26/08/2005 21:12

do you feel sorry for the old lady now?!!
Actually I would have done the same especially as this happened to my SIL and the bus drove off!!

Ladymuck · 26/08/2005 21:15

Nope, I'd have been too busy giving the driver absolute hell for making me collaspe the pram in the first place. I was hormonal for ages!

mumtosomeone · 26/08/2005 21:15

I meant after my post about her daughter etc!!!

emkana · 26/08/2005 21:16

OMG mumtosomeone! What did your SIL do???
