Help - 3 week old with terrible wind

Please help - our little boy is struggling with wind, and i can't seem to wind him properly. He's breastfed, i've not really been around babies before him so maybe i'm not winding him properly? Tried him over my shoulder, sitting up, walking up/down stairs, nothing works!

I also thought breastfed babies weren't meant to get wind? It's so hard, he goes all lovely and sleepy after a feed, but if don't wind him he wakes up 5 mins later. And he screams if i try to wind him, and it doesn't work anyway.

my little girl had terrible wind there for a while. She is 17 weeks now and seems to have grown out of it now thank god.

We used to wind her using the "tiger in the tree" position. Basically lay her face down along your arm with her head resting against your elbow and rub her back in a circular motion. Be quite firm about it to. also we would often let her lie for a little while on her tummy on her play gym. all that wriggling around is good for working the wind up/through. As i recall it produced some spectacular farts.

We also starting giving her a weak infusion of chamomile tea after some advice from a naturapath friend. It worked a treat. She was FF so we made her formula up with it. As you are BF you could maybe try giving him an ounce or two of it after a feed.

Gripe water works well too when a burp is stuck.

ohh i forgot to say, the hula position is pretty good too for getting the gas up. Basically sit the baby on your knee and hold them under the arms. Move their body from the hips in small circles.

My DS2 now 16 weeks really suffered too. Now luckily its passed, he still gets wind but is good at doing huge burps. I think BF babies get wind when milk is v fast so they gulp to try and drink it.

Ideas:

Sit upright for ages after a feed. Burp during a feed. Try BFing so he is sitting up. Upright in a sling is good too.

Infacol was a godsend for us........ Also second the tip about the hula position for winding

Ditto NW London mum, and..

Wind 5 mins into feed, after 10 mins etc, so much easier when air near top, as it were, rather than after loads of milk on top/has gone down further.

Any position is ok as long as back held upright & straight.
As they get stronger they find it easier to burp themselves.

Infacol worked really well for us too.

Infacol before every feed. We're past needing it now and I just found 4 'emergency' packs lurking in the cupboard!

We had the emergency packs too! It did really help us, but I think it can take a couple of days to build up its effectiveness so definitely give it a little while.

Thanks for replies! I nipped to shops yesterday, they only had dentinox, we gave him half a dose last night, he hated it! Spat it all out, can't say i blame him it looked disgusting.

Saying that we had a really good night last night, so perhaps the little bit that went in did some good?

Have been trying out different winding positions as well, thanks!
