Quick grobag question

I've moved all 3 DC "up a bed" tonight and so DS2 is going into the cot for the first time. I wanted to put him in a grobag from now on as they're so much easier but I can only find 6-18 month ones, and he's only 3.5 months ... do you know of any terrible safety hazard there might be if I just bung him in and zip him up? He looks ok in it, just a little nonplussed, and with LOTS of legroom(!)

But I'll bow to your greater knowledge if it's dodgy!

Mine were in them from birth more or less. Enjoy the peace, if that's what ensues!

You can get smaller ones than that . I am sure I had mine in theirs from birth.

HeadFairy · 09/08/2010 22:27

I think the concern is that he might slip down inside the grobag. The 0-6 month ones have little poppers under the arms to make them really snug to ensure there's no slippage for that reason.

I think they only make them 6+ months, but mine was in from 3 months, and was 2 months prem. Make sure it can't slip over his head, arms can't get trapped and it's a really lightweight one, because it's still quite hot at the mo (23degrees in DD's room after windows open all day, I'm just putting her in pjs with no cover at the mo).
BTW Matalan are good for these, v cheap, good quality, slightly smaller I think than others).

You can get 0-6 month ones very easily - mothercare and john lewis both do them and I'm sure lots of other high street places would too.

Headfairy is right, there might be too much room at the arms and neck so he could slip inside it. If he's large for his age though and looks like it's ok I can't see any other reason why not though.

HeadFairy · 09/08/2010 22:34

If you've only got 6-18 month ones you could put him in them and put him feet to foot in the cot with the extra length of the groback tucked firmly in to the end of the cot, that should stop him slipping down. Personally I'd be happier with just a cotton sheet, but it's baking here tonight (ds's bedroom thermometer is showing 24 degrees also with the windows open all day)

My dd was in one from 3 months and had no problems. Just make sure you don't put too thick a bed suit on the baby so that they don't overheat.

my little one used to have a long sleeve vest on so her arms wouldn't get cold and just her nappy.

ScarlettCrossbones · 09/08/2010 22:57

Thanks v much all! Not much chance of him overheating tonight in rainy Scotland ... am jealous of your 24 and 25 degrees!

I know you can get 0-6 month ones but I'm stingily reluctant to buy any for the sake of only another 8 or 10 weeks, when I've got 6-18 and 18-36 month ones coming out of my ears.

HeadFairy, that's a great idea about tucking it in - will do that!

If you don't want to pay full price for a Grobag branded one maybe get one from ebay ??

I know Asda do them aswell, could be worth a look.
Also the John Lewis ones are a little cheaper.

Flossie69 · 11/08/2010 13:37

I bought one for up to 6months, and another for 6-12 months, at a car boot sale. £6 for both, and original price £18 each Grin

Oh, and had DD in a borrowed blue one from Matalan - yes they do seem a little smaller than others.

PartialToACupOfMilo · 12/08/2010 22:54

It goes on weight as well as to which size they need. How heavy is your ds2? And are they actual grobags or another make? I think different makes have different size guides.

I bought grobags to use with my dd when she was born but as she didn't reach 8lb for ages (just under 6lb born) we ended up using sheets and blankets. She's 8 months now and has been using one for a fair few months now but she's still not in her 6-18 months ones as she hasn't quite reached 18lb.

I used to put a scrunchie round the bottom of dd's :)
