What age did you transfer you DC from cot to bed?

DS2 is 18mo, and we're moving in a few weeks. His cot will need to be taken down to move and I'm wondering if it might be easier to just put it up as a bed in our new home.

Is 18mo too young though? Should I get a bed guard? As it's a cotbed it will only be low...

DD was already in a bed by 18 months. Was fine. She hasn't fallen out yet and she's 3.3!

BigAngryRedThing · 09/08/2010 19:33

Oh really? That's my main worry, I can't imagine him not falling out!

What about going to bed? I can imagine just refusing and playing with his toys!

DD was 2 - and I wish I'd I've done it sooner! She was in a right mood when she had to go to her cot to sleep ... I switched her to a bed, with a guard, and on the first night (and every night since - she's 3 now) I haven't had any trouble, and she's asleep within half an hour, and sleeps for 12 hours. Bliss. Go for it!

my ds was 19mths and was perfectly fine

i was told stair gate at bedroom door and toys in tubs duvet wrapped under matress on outside of bed and open by the wall so if rolling duvet would hold him in or put on floor beside bed incase falls out

my ds has never once fell out of his bed

choufleur · 09/08/2010 19:38

20 months. He was fine. He still slept in a sleeping bag when we first moved him which i think helped. And he had abed guard too.

Meglet · 09/08/2010 19:39

DS was 3.3, he had a cot bed so never grew out of it. I just moved him once he decided to start climbing out.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 09/08/2010 19:40

DS is 2.2 - still in his cot. Other friends have moved their kids with very mixed results - early wakings, night time wanderings, etc.

Personally I would make the effort to put the cot back together but then with a 10mth old DS2 to contend with who is a rubbish sleeper, we are not taking any chances!

DS1 will come out of his cot when he climbs out, or when he reaches the age of 10, whichever comes soonest Wink.

BigAngryRedThing · 09/08/2010 19:40

Oh wow, brilliant! You've made my mind up! Will probably have to get tubs with lids...at the moment his toys are in open tubs and I can't see him staying in bed if they are easily accessible!

Well Ds is 15 months now and don't see me taking the sides off the cot any time soon.

He moves A LOT, I peek in on him everytime I walk past his room to go to the bathroom or my bedroom and he is always in a completely different position from the time before.

I will move him either when he attempts to climb out or he stops moving so much. Don't know when that will be though.

BigAngryRedThing · 09/08/2010 19:43

Oh, cross post !

He's a good sleeper, once he goes. It does sometimes take up to half hour for him to go though.

Mine moved out of the cot when I needed it for the next baby, or the DC climbed over the bars. It doesn't really matter whenGrin.

An 18 month old would be fine in a bed I'm sure. But if he's a bit unsettled by the move he might be less so if he sleeps in the cot. At least until he gets used to his new suroundings.

MunchMummy · 09/08/2010 19:49

DD1 - 17 months as new sister arriving. Did use a bed guard for several months as she would fall out otherwise. But she LOVED her bed.

DD2 - 22 months (daddy was making her bed from scratch). Again we've put a bed guard on as we don't trust she won't fall out (she's 26 months now and is just about learning to use the pillow).

18 months will be fine - let them get used to the duvet over the summer when its hot enough not to worry that they'll wake up cold as they've not learned to pull the duvet over themselves.

teaandcakeplease · 09/08/2010 19:50

I only moved my DD when she learnt to climb out and I thought it was dangerous. She did need a bed guard as she fell out a lot whilst asleep to begin with, until that was bought and would wake very upset about it all.

My DS is 19 months and I have no plans to move him to a bed yet tbh. He's happy in his cot still and hasn't even tried to climb out yet.

lollymad · 09/08/2010 19:51

Took bars off DD's cot bed when she was 17 months and she's only ever fallen out twice - both times in her sleep and stayed fast asleep, wrapped in her duvet on the floor!
She's now just 4 and moved into a big bed as needed the cot bed as a cot for DS.
TBH she never got out of bed and like a previous poster is always asleep within half an hour, so maybe we were lucky.

Rebeccaruby · 09/08/2010 20:07

Should be fine at that age, but first night in a strange place possibly not the best time. Although, I suppose that because everything else is different, he might notice less IYSWIM.
