Smelly nappies - please help!

I thought this had got better but it's got worse again - his nappies (flexitots) come out of the wash smelling completely clean, then after a couple of hours on they often smell of ammonia. And if I put a reusable on him at night, the smel in the morning is like opening a bottle of neat ammonia.

I do a short cold rinse before washing, have switched from washing at 40 to usually washing at 60, and put 1 1/2 tbsp of vinegar in the fabric conditioner drawer.

Any ideas gratefully received!

I had same with my bedbugs i washed them 3 times on a cold wash with no powder then rise with vinegar. Did trick nfor about a mth before i had to repeate

Cold rinse first and I now wash with bio and it's done the trick. I stried stripping, vinegar, lots of line drying but only good old bio did it in the end. Used bio ever since.

....and an extra rinse at the end. Apparently hotter washes cook in the smell too.

I've gone over to bio as well but only about 3rd the amount I'd usually use. Also do 3 Shock rinses - the amount of bubbles still coming out is shocking. They need to leave the machine smelling of nothing rather than smelling of washing powder. Bit of an arse really as now a load of nappies takes forever with all of the extra rinses but they seem to be staying stink free at the moment.

Right, bio it is then for the next wash. Really hope this works.

I finally got round to doing a strip wash after (cough) 8 months of using cloth nappies.

I did 1 wash with Napisan only and then 1 wash with nothing (both 60c), and 3 rinses until I couldn't see any more bubbles.

The biscuity/widdly smell when the nappies get piddled in has disappeared.

Hooray.

PS: I use Dream Dris and Bumgenius, I think microfibre gets stinky a lot quicker than natural fabrics. I find the same applies to DH's pongy running shirts.

Bah.
Last night washed with Ecover bio for the second time (at 40, with extra rinses before and after). 'Clean' nappies now smell musty.

The previous time, I used bio and half my nappies seemed better, but the older ones with more microfibre were still ammonia-stinky after an hour on his bum.

He's starting nursery next week, and going for a couple of hours each day from today. I can't send him in nappies that make him smell like that - you can smell it through his clothes.

Help help help. Could Napisan help - should I go and buy some? How do I know if the problem is detergent build-up or bacteria? I don't see bubbles when I rinse them. What do I do with these musty-smelling nappies?
