Washing nappies! What do you use?

Should be having my new nappies delivered soon and running out of wash powder too so may as well get something I can use with everything including nappies.

At the moment we are using bio powder but I hate the build up of residue it causes. Need to switch back to non-bio I think anyway for the new baby. Would a liquid be better than powder or is there anything else you'd recommend? Soap nuts/ Eco balls? Read mixed reviews on both of these but opinions would still be appreciated!

Thank-you.

I use Totsbots potion to wash my nappies it is antibac and non bio powder all in one and works at 30 or 40 degrees. Then use non bio powder on the rest of the washing.

That tots bots potion sounds good.

I really wanted to try and avoid using different things for different garments really but if it works then who am I to complain lol.

You will need to add somthing to nappies if washing at lower than 60degrees as you need to kill any bacteria and washing at lower than 60 without an added antibacterial will not disinfect your nappies. If you want ot use normal washing podwer then you can use Bio-D nappy sanititser which is eco friendly and not has harsh as some other more chemically ones. The Mio wash and nappisan both irritated DD's skin.

I wash mine at 40 with one non-bio wash tablet plus a scoop of Miofresh to kill the bacteria. Haven't had any problems with skin irritation. I find it's a good idea to do an extra full rinse after the main wash tho (i.e. not just a 'super rinse' or similar), as insufficient rinsing can irritate baby's skin.

Have been converted to soap nuts. They wash and soften just as well as the bold 2 in 1 I was using and best of all no build up which means less coardboardy smelly nappies and no gunk going through the machine. Good for the environment and cheap.

I use 1 tab of fairy crushed to make sure it works and wash nappies at 60. Not very eco but suits us :)

shelscrape · 09/08/2010 17:18

i always washed mine with Ecover washing liquid at 60 degrees. They always came out clean, no skin irritation eitheer. I found the secret was to soak the nappies overnight before washing and give them a thorough rinse before washing them.

I initially used Tots Bots, which I liked, but have now switched to Bio-D nappy sanitiser, as I can just add it to my regular ecover non-bio powder (I wash at 30 degrees). I find its easier to just add a little scoop to my regular powder (a little goes a long way, so it lasts and is great value for money) than having a separate nappy powder.

Another soap nut fan here! I never add anything to kill the bacteria though Confused

knuckingfackered · 13/08/2010 21:36

soap nuts, cheap and very 'right on'

the rumour is ecover leaves a residue and causes nappy rash

not my personal experience as never risked it having heard thet

lifeas3plus1 · 13/08/2010 21:41

Before ds1 was born I changed all our wash stuff to ecover and found it didn't ever get things clean and it stunk to high heaven. (the ecover that is not the clothes)

I may try the soap nuts, At the moment I'm using a bit of fairy non bio and a couple drops of tea tree oil.

Does that sound ok?

Bio D non bio powder works really well and then adding Bio D Nappy fresh to nappy loads is an easy way to use the powder for normal loads and nappies. Ecover is renowned for causing skin irritation but I sell Bio D at work and we always reccomend it for nappies and have never had any problems reported.

FlipFantasia · 14/08/2010 15:51

Am surprised at ecover apparently causing skin irritation - I have comedy sensitive skin (as well as nickel allergy) and everything other than ecover non-bio causes dermatitis/itchy skin rashes in me. I've used it for years and absolutely no problems with it. Though I love the Bio-D nappy stuff so I'll keep an eye out for their non-bio Rosie.

AngelDog · 19/08/2010 19:42

I use Eco balls and sanitiser (the Mio stuff).

Mummy2Bookie · 21/08/2010 07:59

We have just started using reusables. To be honest I just plan on washing the nappies with our usual non bio at a 40 or 60 degree wash if she ever has a stomach bug, they will be washed with the nappy powders, or maybe we would just switch back to reusables until the bug passes

skippingturtle · 09/09/2010 13:49

Confused! I use Surcare at the moment. Would I need both the BioD and the soap balls? Is one a cleaner and the other an anti-bacterial?
