Do your 2yrs sleep in the day?

My Ds has only just (last few months) slept through the night - he's 2yrs! Always had 1 1/2 hours in day.

Today, no sleep at all during day, put him down as usual chatted for 1hr to himself, was happy just apparently not tired. Would have gone to get him earlier Blush but was trying to grab quick nap myself as he was up at 5.30am.

Please tell me this is not the end of my lovely day naps??

How long do yours sleep for?

Mine just turned 2 last week but has slept through from really early on for some reason. In fact he loves a lie in too, he got up at gone 10am on his birthday! He will sleep from 1-3 hours in the day depending on if we are home/out. He does go to bed at around 9pm-10pm but he doesn't get up until 9am too unless it's a nursery day where we try and get him in bed earlier as he's up at 8am. Sometimes he will resist a day nap but he then becomes the most irritable horrible child so I hope he too doesn't give them up just yet!

Shannaratiger · 07/08/2010 14:24

My 3yr old still sometimes sleeps in the day, maximum 2 hours then 2 hours later to bed (9pm). Lots of my friends 2yr olds and younger no longer have a sleep though.

Meglet · 07/08/2010 14:29

My almost 2 yr old DD still has up to 2 hours in the day, usually between 1-3. She has naps at nursery too.

My 3.9yo DS still naps for a couple of hours at weekends as he's worn out after a week of nursery. He no longer naps at nursery, too much wriggling and messing about!

They both sleep fine at night, usually 8pm -7am so I am grateful for the peace in the day.

DS is 2.9. He's at nursery 3 days a week and has about an hour there, sometimes less.
At home, he still has 2 hours between 12.30 and 2.30. I think he's catching up for being at nursery.
He goes to bed at 7pm and is usually up at 6-6.30.
He can manage without a nap. We went to London last Sat and he missed his nap. He was OK, but starting to flag at about 3pm so we headed home and he slept for 30 mins on the train!

When he does give up the nap, I'm going to try and enforce a "quiet time" after lunch, ideally in bed with a book or story CD on. Or more likely, an hour of Cbeebies! So, Dribbleface, don't feel [blush} for letting him be awake in his cot. He was probably just having a nice time chilling out!

greensnail · 07/08/2010 14:37

My DD is younger (19 mo) and almost always has a nap during the day. Occasionally she just lies in her bed chatting to herself instead though. I don't feel guilty about leaving her there then as she's still getting some quiet time and she's much less tired on these evenings than when she's had no nap at all.

Hopefully the same is true of your DS and he'll have had enough of a rest not to be completely overtired later.

mamasunshine · 07/08/2010 14:58

My ds1 is 2.4 and still has a nap every day for 1.5-2 hrs. A few months ago he did go through a stage where he only napped for 3 days out of 7, but I still put him to bed with a book for some quiet time. I know ds still needs his nap, if he doesn't have it he really starts getting grumpy/naughty around dinner time - often won't eat his dinner when in this mood. He's in bed 7.30pm-7am, and is actually asleep aprox 8pm-6.30am.

Orissiah · 07/08/2010 16:56

I'm not jealous of BlueBump - 9pm or 10pm is too close to my own bedtime. I put my 2.2yr old DD down at 7pm and she sleeps till 7am if no nap and any time from 6am if she's had a nap. If I didn't put her down until 9pm then I would get no adult / me time. We have to get up at 6.30 or 7am to get ready for work so her 7am wake up time works well for us (and when she starts primary school later on).

To answer OP's question - mine usually naps 45 mins if put down but then generally wakes up a little earlier in the morning. She can usually go without a nap though and then sleeps in a bit later.

I'm happy with no nap, personally. We simply have quiet time with CBeebies for 30 mins.

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 07/08/2010 17:10

Yes he has between 40 minutes and an hour and a half. Goes down between 12.15 and 1.30 depending on days activities but must be awake after 2 hours sleep max or up by 3pm latest - whichever comes first.

Doesn't affect his bedtime.

Skimty · 07/08/2010 18:42

My 22 month old doesn't nap. My almost 4 year old dropped his nap at about the same time. AFAIK it's reasonably common to drop the nap around two.

bluebump · 07/08/2010 19:21

I only work until 12.30 Orissiah so I do get a good few 'me' hours in the afternoon which do the job. Sometimes I do wish I got more time to read a book in bed and not be so tired but it's not the end of the world.

I'm sure it won't last forever and he'll be going to bed early and getting up early so i'm making the most of it now!

pigleychez · 07/08/2010 21:36

My DD has just turned 2 and sleeps about 2.5 hours after lunch.
She still goes down for bed around 7.30/8 and sleeps through till about 6.30 ish.

I have a 12 week old baby so If i can get both of them napping at the same time its bliss! Grin

dribbleface · 08/08/2010 20:22

Hi pigley,

remember you from July 08 postnatal threads, i was posting under mummywannabe at the time. Congratulations on new baby! Thinking of it myself, now just to convince DH!

re: sleep - well he went to bed at 7 and slept till 6.30am, was a nightmare before bed though! Today had 35 mins in car. I think i selfishly want him to continue with nice naps in day, I need my rest! Grin

Ds2 is 2.6. He needs a 10 min power nap otherwise he falls asleep on the floor at about 4pm, can't be woken, then won't go to sleep at bedtime. Works best if he is in the car at around lunchtime.
If he has a 'proper' nap he won't go to sleep until Kate and wakes stupidly early.

MrsJohnDeere · 08/08/2010 20:32

Late not Kate (damned predictive text on phone)!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 08/08/2010 20:36

When DS was 2 he was still napping during the day, but not necessarily every day, maybe every other day?

He carried on like this until nearly 3, which was mainly because DD had come along and I used to gather us all up in my bed in the afternoon in the hope we would all get some sleep!

HeadFairy · 08/08/2010 20:37

ds is 2.11 and he dropped his nap 6 weeks after dd was born (7 months ago, so ds was 2.4) I was gutted because dd is only just going through the night now, so I've done 5 or so months on about 4 or 5 hours a night zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Tinkerisdead · 08/08/2010 20:40

My Dd is bit younger 20 months, but she only recently started sleeping through reliably, 7.30- 5.45am Shock
However at 10 she then wants a nap for 2 hours as she gets so tired from waking so early. I'm seriously considering waking her now to cut it short in the hope of lengthening her night time sleep. Although i work from home and the 2 hours in the day is bliss for getting things done!

Ragwort · 08/08/2010 20:45

My DS went to playschool in the morning and then slept every afternoon from 2pm - 4pm until aged 3 and then always went to bed at 7pm - 6.30am (which suited us) - on a few occasions he went right through from 2pm until the next morning !! Grin

dribbleface · 08/08/2010 20:45

I know thedoctorswife - i started limiting his day sleep to 1-1 1/2 to get him into bed at night! But i miss long sleeps in the day! Maybe his refusal to sleep is my fault for waking him up Confused

Tinkerisdead · 08/08/2010 20:58

oh no dont say that cos mine has only just started sleeping(and at moment we're all in one room at my mums) so she is waking in night calling mummmyyyy big bed.arghhh

MY DD2 stopped regularly napping during the day around 15 months Angry

She's only just (at 26 months) starting to show signs of sleeping through the night
