Classification of OU honours degree vs. brick uni- can someone explain?

Just been looking at OU website and it seems that you can get first class honours degree with just one first and three seconds or two first and two thirds (they take into account 4 course results, 2 of which have to 3rd kevel and then they do all sort of complicated calculations).

So is it the same in a brick university? I sort of thought you had to have first for most of your courses to end up with a first class degree.

Just curious, I've done only one course so far and am starting the next one in October.

Oh, really? Hmmm...A bit weird that you can get a first class gedree without having a majority of firsts as the course results...

Isn't it? Confused

Just puzzles me.

Because your best results are weighted as are your level three results so if you do well at level 3 it counts for proportionately more than the same result at level 2. Brick universities are the same - your final year results count for more than your second year results and your first year results are normally disregarded. So as long as you do well in your level 3 courses, you can do less well in your level 2.

X-post with Proley. I have to admit I was surprised to get a first as a lot of my results were seconds - but I think I also benefited from the fact that the majority of my courses were at level 3, so counted for more than the same result at level 2.

I think I'll do the same as you FirstLady- I started with a210 and all the other courses I want to do are level 3-with the exception of Creative Writing, where you have to do the first module at level 2, I think.

On the chance that you come back to this thread, I have a question. You know how you get your performance profile thingy with your exam results? Well, I had 9 'excellents' and 3 'goods' and yet my answers for each question were within grade 2 range- even the one where I got 4 'excellents' out of 4 possible. It got me wondering what decided that that one answer was within grade 2 range if all the criteria got 'excellent'? I'm very happy with 2.1, just wondering...My spelling is ok, so what? Any ideas?

It's my first year, see, so I get a bit confused sometimes!

I did advanced creative writing without doing the level two course first no one told me I couldn't - but then I've been a journalist for most of my working life so that probably helped me a bit.
I don't know about the not getting a distinction when you had so many excellents. That's a bit of a bummer. Was each question worth the same percentage of the marks? I don't really know how they calculate though - maybe someone more knowledgeable will come along.
The creative writing course is brilliant by the way - I thoroughly recommend it.

I think I'll do the CW after AA316, but will start with level 2. Advanced CW is about writing for TV, screenplays etc.,isn't it?

Yes, all the question are worth the same. Weird...I think the exams are marked twice, so maybe the Board decided that it wasn't good enough for the first, but didn't change the evaluation bit, just the overall grade?

First I was so happy with 2.1, now I want to know why I didn't get the first!Grin

Hi there,

I just put together an Open University Degree Classification Calculator, where you can enter your courses and grades, and (hopefully) it will correctly calculate your OU degree classification. It's at cleveret.net/?page_id=29 , and I'd be grateful for any feedback, especially from anyone who's completed a degree, so they can compare it with their actual classification.

Thanks

Biguana this calculates exactly the same as the OU does for me - HTH

Much appreciated. As long as it doesn't get them completely wrong!
