Cbeebies or CBBC??

When did you switch? What age? DH says I am too protecting of our 5 yr old as I generally only let him watch CBeeBies and therefore he is too afraid of stuff that he shouldnt be afraid of at his age.

Example: He choose a toy at the toy shop with his own gift money. He liked it because it is alien/ufo thing (I think it is the planet protector series but he has never watched the show but liked the alien thing on it) BUT he got it home and will play with it, but only with the sound turned off as the laugh by the 'baddie' is too scary.

Thoughts?

Pixie - your last comment was interesting to me as the younger one (a year apart) wasnt too fussed with thte laugh, so maybe it is a personality thing.

Yes mixing them is a good idea, then he would think I was letting him watch it and there wouldnt be the begging (LOL!!). interesting to know there is the innocent programs as well as the teenagery stuff - I might have to flick through the guide (when it accidently gets clicked through to it always seems to be over his head so I didnt even know there were younger shows on it!)

My DD's 5 and is outgrowing the Cbeebies and likes some of CBBC. It's unfortunate that the CBBC is quite hit and miss though - you never know what's going to follow the program she's watching that's been fine. Maybe it's trying to cover too big an age range.
That Big Babies is funny eh? and weird.

Blahrahrah · 06/08/2010 00:07

Thats true. He isnt missing out on anything. Thanks for reminding me of that fact! I guess it is just getting the balance right

(and on a non stalkerish note...it is nice to get your perspective, because I see you around the boards and you always seem to give such balanced and sensible advice and always come across as a very 'together' Mum and person and seem to be the voice of experience iyswim? You come across as the type of Mum I would like to be...cool calm and collected and non flappable and reasonable! What is your secret?! (And I promise I am not a wierdo or a stalker! ))

DD is 9 and still hasn't moved onto CBBC. Nick Jr seems to be a bit of an in the middle option.

paisleyleaf · 06/08/2010 00:14

We don't have Nick Jr. Just that blasted Tiny Pop and Pop that repeats and repeats Strawberry Shortcake, Timothy Goes to School and Captain Bloody Mack, with lots of awful adverts.

elphiethropp · 06/08/2010 00:24

Tiny Pop urrgh, not quite as bad as Pop Girl with an awful Aussie programme called Sleepover Club

SpeedyGonzalez · 06/08/2010 00:25

Blah, I would let your DS lead on this. Clearly he's able to decide when something's too scary for him and to eliminate it from his play. So he'll do the same with TV.

Sounds a bit like my DS.

bratnav · 06/08/2010 00:31

We changed over about 6 months ago. Dd1 is 8 but DSD and DD2 are 6 and weren't ready until then for some of the programmes on CBBC, so we waited (only 18 mo between them in age). I didn't think about mixing and matching as they don't watch tv that often and its usually on when I need a rest so having to change channels would have made it pointless for me

My ds1 is 3 and we've always watched cbeebies. he seems to be boring of it slightly now and much prefers to have a dvd on.
His favourite at the moment is Madagascar or bloddy Thomas the Tank Engine.
We have been through a Harry Potter phase, Jurassic Park, he also like Spiderman and Pedter Pan.
When he wants to sit onfront of the telly, he normally gets out a dvd and just puts it on himself

SleepyCaz · 06/08/2010 01:31

OMG
Timothy Goes To School is number one in my pet hate TV shows! Along with Little bEAR!

Tiny Pop is vile!!
