What does your 9 year old watch on tv?

Dd1 is going through a bit of a crisis at the moment. She feels babyish compared to her friends because she still watches (and enjoys) cbeebies. The sort of programmes she watches I would say are ok for her age (eg Grandpa in my pocket, Gigglebiz) but she feels a bit cut off from her peers.

The trouble is she doesn't really like the HSM/Hannah Montana type thing. I've suggested she tries some cbbc programmes but she's not really interested.

I'm quite happy for her to grow up slowly and she feels she doesn't want to 'change' but it's awful to be the odd one out. I was like that at school and I got teased a lot.

Also...pop music? What sort of music do girls this sort of age listen to? She is my oldest child so this is all new to me and I'm a bit clueless myself about music!

My DD loves Bindi The Jungle Girl, Winx Club and Oggy and the Cockroaches. She watches Pop TV channel.

Music she likes Lady Gaga and Girls Aloud.

I think its nice that she still likes cbeebies. I wish I could turn back time on letting my dds watch the disney channel.

huffythethreadslayer · 05/08/2010 18:45

Mine hates Hannah Montanna, HSM, etc. She watches very little, mostly Horrible Histories, Shaun the Sheep and the robot wars type game show they had on recently (I can't remember the title!).

She doesn't worry about not fitting in too much. She watches dvds when she's in the mood, mostly films.

My dd likes the Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys, Black Sabbath (so not mine or DH's taste...must've picked it up from her mates folks). She's recently got into Madness (all mine!) but only because she did a cover of Baggy Trousers for the recent Fun Fame school event they had. She doesn't really do much in the way of music, but I'm hoping it'll come later.

Hope that helps a bit.

The music isn't much of an issue at the mo with mine, so long as they can name a Gaga track you're sorted. One of mine loves Queen, one loves Florence and the Machine. Cbbc wise they like Sarah Jane Adventures, Trapped and Horrible Histories. I like all of them too so Bonus!

marialuisa · 05/08/2010 21:15

DD doesn't really watch any TV-not interested. Music seems to be Lady Gaga, Pixie Lott,Beyonce, Rihanna. She's also keen on Jay-Z, but that's from us not her friends!

Beattiebow · 05/08/2010 21:18

my dd loves doctor who. she likes sarah jane adventures, horrible histories and MI High on cbbc. She likes Glee too and also she has watched My Family recently and finds it hilarious.

She likes Glee music, beyonce, lady gaga.

Oh yes, and total wipeout and x factor.

CheeseandGherkins · 05/08/2010 21:32

Dd is 8 and a half and like the simpsons but not much other tv aimed at children. She enjoys watching the tv that I watch, or have on sky plus. She likes, for example, cookery shows like come dine with me, undercover boss, documentaries etc. She tends to read a lot of books, some of the classics and older books really though. Not adult books but she doesn't like the Jaqueline sp? Wilson ones at all.

Music she likes anything that's on the radio or that I have on the tv, often sings along and sings around the house Planning on getting her a mini stereo with radio and cd for Christmas actually.

gorionine · 05/08/2010 21:39

Ds is 9 he mainly watches Cbbc
Things we watch as a family: Masterchef, Dr Who, top gear (not always suitable though and sometimes get flicked), animal documentaries,

He is not into music at all.

Coca, I am foreign and when Dd1 started school, I made it my duty to read all the horrible history books(usually hiding inthe bathroom)to catch up quickly with English History. Dh kept asking me why I was laughing on my own in there

I have a quite young nine year old ( well, he will be at the end of August) and he likes CBeebies too (although he pretends it is because his three year old brother does!)

He likes:
Basil Brush
MI High
Sarah Jane Adventures
Dr Who
Shaun the Sheep
Bear Behaving Badly (I think it's called)
Simpsons
Scooby Doo
Total Wipeout
Dennis and Gnasher

"His" music is JLS, Florence and the Machine, Dizzee Rascal, Cheryl Cole, but he likes loads of "our" stuff, The Farm, Kaisers, Killers etc

I love gorionine reading Horrible Histories to acquaint herself with British History!

onimolap · 05/08/2010 22:15

My DS still watches CBBC: likes Deadly 60, Trapped, Raven, that Raven-like thing with transformer shaped robots, any quiz/team gane shows, Horrible Histories, the science thing with Ed and Oucho, and Dick and Dom.

He loves Dr Who and the Sarah Jane Adventures, Hole in the Wall, Total Wipeout (and more or less anything else he catches with Richard Hammond), Final Score and most other sports, Penguin Island, The Simpsons, and every single one of the quiz programmes that ITV has on at 1730ish.

Oh dear, that sounds like an awful lot!

Something else to look out for are the Royal Institution Christmas lectures: he loved the ones on Science of Survival (Hugh Montgomery) and Number Mysteries (Marcus du Sautnoy).

DD is 8.5, and funnily enough I was thinking of starting a thread like this as we've only recently got a tv, so could do with some pointers as to what she might like

So far she likes Shaun the Sheep and the Deadly 60 which is kind of like David Attenborough on acid as far as I can see.

She's not into music at all & none of her friends in her year seem to be, though her 10 yr old friend is. (10 year old friend likes Hounded and Blast Lab on CBBC I know.)

MarthaQuest · 05/08/2010 22:22

Ds (8.75)

watches

The Simpsons
Total Wipeout
You've been Framed, animals do the funniest things, etc.
Coast
Ray mears type programmes
Countrywise (because we won't let him watch soaps

and ...

In the Night Garden
Come Outside
Zingzillas
Gigglebiz, until I come into the room and turn the tripe off
64 Zoo Lane- he will sing along to the theme tune in a beautiful choristers voice.

Admittedly the CBeebies programmes are on for toddler DD's benefit but he likes them as well ,although it is a secret from his peers.

No harm in it at all IMO.

southeastastra · 05/08/2010 22:24

phineas and ferb, looney tunes

MarthaQuest · 05/08/2010 22:32

How could I forget Raven?

cece · 05/08/2010 22:39

Horrible Histories
that one with Dick & Dom in a forest, on a quest
Total Wipeout
Dr Who
Sarah Jane Adventures
Deadly 60
Dancing on Ice
X Factor
Strictly Come Dancing
Victorian Families/Farm (Ben Fogle?)
Extreme Dreams
University Challenge
Grand Designs
Escape to the Country
Basil Brush

cece · 05/08/2010 22:39

Oh and Bear Grylls programme!

Butkin · 09/08/2010 00:04

DD 7. She moved on from choosing CBBC a while ago with the exceptions of Deadly 60 (she loves Steve), Scorpion Island and Bear Behaving Badly.

Given the choice she'd normally head for Pop Girl (a channel on Sky) - her favourite shows on there are Sleepover Club and Saddle Club plus all the chat about music.

She still adores Peppa Pig though and watches it all the time on Milkshake (a great selection of kids shows every morning on Channel 5).

She has been to see X Factor finalists in concert (she loves shows like X Factor, Britain's Got Talent etc). On her Ipod and Youtube are usually Lady Gaga, Alexandra Burke, Robbie Williams and she has a real thing for the Backstreet Boys!

meerkate · 09/08/2010 17:29

my DD, 9, mainly watches DVDs after school for a while with her 7 yr old DS. They watch v little telly per se, but do love Horrible Histories with a passion.
We have very few channels, so thankfully she has had no opportunity to get into Hannah Montana etc. She does however LOVE music. mainly pixie lott, lady gaga, and the usual mainstream girlpap (which i quite like too) but also stuff DH and i listen to, it's so nice now in the car that we can all listen to the music we ALL enjoy on long journeys
