dd ear piercing with a needle

DD want's her ear done but I'm not keen on the guns they use in most places. I also know that you can get them pierced using a needle.

Where do you go that you don't have to be 16+. Has anyone had their child's ears done with the needle and if so what age were they.

What is it about the gun you don't like?

BollockBrain · 04/08/2010 19:05

I had mine done with a needle but that was about 30 years ago. Not sure where you can get them done with a needle nowadays. DD had gun and no problems.

My dd1 (10) got her ears done at the start of the summer holidays with the gun. What's the problem? The gun does it with the earring that is going to be in there for 6 weeks anyway.

We went to a local branch of Claire's on a personal recommendation and they even did both ears at once (2 members of staff together) so it was all over very quickly. Can't imagine having it done with a needle, then the earing going in, then the same process on the other ear.

(tbh honest I thought this was about 13 year olds piercing each other's ears with needles, like I did to my friend when we were 13!)

BelleDameSansMerci · 04/08/2010 19:08

I'd think the gun would be a safer option as, I believe, it uses the actual ear-ring stud to pierce the ear and thus is definitely clean (assuming the ear-studs have just come out of sterile packaging. I'd also think it would be less painful and much faster.

Having said that, I had mine pierced at age 14 (after my mother had absolutely refused to allow me to have them done) with a gun and I fainted It didn't even hurt. The same thing happened when I had my tummy button done at age 39...

BollockBrain · 04/08/2010 19:09

lol, yes weegie, i remember that!

sockadoodledo · 04/08/2010 19:23

Go to a proper body piercers and they'll do it. Needles are known to be much better than guns. Whether your DD would like to have her ears done by a bearded bloke with stretched ears rather the cutesy Claires staff is up to her of course

catinthehat2 · 04/08/2010 19:34

Google "piercing guns unhygienic"

Do it before eating.

gingerkirsty · 04/08/2010 19:37

What sockadoodle said - proper body piercers use a needle and it is far far cooler than getting it done in Claire's Accessories!!!

DrivenToDistraction · 04/08/2010 19:45

Yes, a needle is much better. More hygienic, more precise positioning of earings and a less violent procedure too IYSWIM.

There's a tiny cannula around the needle which is left in the hole while the earring is put in. So, no pushing an earring through a freshly pierced hole. A lot of proper body piercers will apply a local anesthetic cream if asked.

thisisyesterday · 04/08/2010 19:47

i would go to a proper body piercer.

i had my lip pierced (with a needle obviously) and i can honestly say that it really didn't hurt.
having my ears pierced with a gun made me cry

cheesypopfan · 04/08/2010 19:49

a needle is better from a healing process as well. The gun, due to the nature of insertion, increases your risk of ending up with something called a keloid scar, which is a large lumpy growth at the back of your earlobe. Not harmless, but unsightly.

lexcat · 04/08/2010 20:14

For all the reasons mentioned I want dd ears done will a needle. The only piercing place near by uses a gun for under 13. Over 13 will use a needle. Any where else I can try?

We went to a local tattoo parlour/body piercing place for our DD (11), where they did it with a needle. I had to take ID I think (mine and hers). If you have any near you give them a ring. (Oops, just seen you don't have any near you - no other ideas then! Does it have to be really near by though? You're only going once.)

lexcat · 04/08/2010 20:43

Yes we do have tattoo places but I thought you had to be 16+ to even go in to a tattoo parlour.

DD's 9 and knows all about how the needle works. What did your dd think about having her ears done with the needle.

When I saw your thread title I too thought you meant your DD piercing herself.

My DD1 had her ears pierced first time aged 10 (after nagging for seven years to have it done) with a gun in a reputable jewellers.

Then, aged 15, she wanted more holes in her ears and decided to do it herself.

She used a darning needle and now has 3 holes in each ear. I don't know whether she was very brave or very silly.

It was probably more hygienic than in a shop though.

I think as long as the place is clean and they are experienced your DD will be ok however it's done - and of course as long as she keeps up the cleaning routine afterwards.

PlanetEarth · 04/08/2010 21:42

lexcat, my DD was fine when about the needle, though she went a bit pale afterwards, and sat down for a bit before we left. I couldn't watch! Lots of her friends thought it sounded horrific , but like you we decided it would be more hygienic, and they're supposed to heal better afterwards. It was more expensive than Claire's mind you.

PlanetEarth · 04/08/2010 21:46

Bah, why can't you edit your typos on this forum?!

Shaz10 · 04/08/2010 21:53

I have a second hole in one of my lobes that my friend did with an earring. Still going strong nearly 20 years later!

zazen · 04/08/2010 22:13

I had mine done with a darning needle years ago by a hairdresser.

I had ether spray to freeze the lobe, and the needle was dipped in alcohol and put over a flame, and when cool,(obv) into my ear lobe it went (within the circular mark made by a pen as I remember).

There was a sterile wrapped cork at the other side to receive the needle.

TBH the only thing I found off putting was the noise of the needle in the cork.

I can't stand the idea of a gun - what if it went in, Bang, lopsided? Oops.

Try and get some ether anaesthetic spray yourself, and do it at home, with gloves, sterile cork etc.

lexcat · 05/08/2010 18:46

Personally prefer to get her ears done with a gun then even think of doing it myself.

misdee · 05/08/2010 18:56

i have 3 sets of visable holes in my ears. the first set are actually closed up but was done by an inept hairdesser at the age of 13, with a gun.

the second two were redone a few years later at a better hairdressers also with a gun.

if i woulod do it again, wi would choose a needle as more precise.
