Anyone got the Antilop Ikea highchair? Is it secure enough with just a waist strap?

That's it really, just put my 7 month old in it...looks like it will be really easy to keep clean... just wandering how safe it is! I won't be leaving the room when she's in it or anything... Do your lo's do ok in it? Thanks!

I've got one - it was fine until she was about 12 months, especially with the inflatable insert or a towel shoved around her. But when she started standing up in it I had to fix a harness to it (just a reins harness thingy).

mistressploppy · 04/08/2010 10:13

My wriggly 9mo can't get out when the strap's done up - just make sure it's tight enough. He's been in it since 6mo, with the inflatable thingy, very secure

Best thing I ever bought, that high chair.

JaMmRocks · 04/08/2010 10:21

Until this week I'd have said yes, but the other morning caught DS2 trying to escape! Problem so far solved with small cushion behind him. Now I need to work out what I did with the straps it came with...

Love the chair though, so easy to clean and move

Whats this inflatable thingy then?

They normally have them in ikea next to the highchairs for about a fiver. They are pretty good.
mistressploppy - I don't know how DD managed it but even with the strap very tight she still managed to slide out and stand up within seconds of putting her in. Harness works well though.

roslily · 04/08/2010 12:05

Ds is 11 months and has been i it since 6 months. I have the inflatable cushion too. It is brilliant, very easy to keep clean.

PrivetDancer · 04/08/2010 12:07

I love that chair - have never bothered with the straps personally.
DD (now 23 months) does stand up in it occasionally but a sharp "sit down" usually does the trick!

lolalotta · 04/08/2010 12:18

Privet dancer am I being silly worrying? Did you not even bother with the waist strap? I suppose she would have to be a very clever 7 month old to get out of it!

lolalotta · 04/08/2010 12:20

What is the inflatable cushion for exactly, does it push them closer to the tray or just make it more comfy? Sorry if that's a silly question... I never noticed them when I was in the store!

PrivetDancer · 04/08/2010 12:29

well no, I don't think you're being silly worrying, that is what mothers do after all!
But at 7 months I doubt she'll be pushing herself up yet, no. I just never got round to putting the straps on and DD is not the type to fling herself out of things, so, touch wood, we've been ok. She's generally more interested in eating her dinner than getting out of the chair

I would think the waist strap would be enough to keep them in when bigger unless you have a real houdini.
You can probably get extender straps to make them over the shoulder ones if she does start escaping too (not from ikea but I'm sure I've seen them online before)

mistressploppy · 04/08/2010 13:31

here is the cushion thingy - it just helps to wedge in the littler ones!

Lovethesea · 04/08/2010 13:40

It's always been fine for DD, now 21 months. I've just made sure the waist strap is tight enough. In fact, DD is at the 'uh oh!' stage and alerts me immediately if I forget to snap it on straight away!

We used the plastic insert when she was small for the chair, it is 3 sided and goes behind them and along their sides. It stopped DD flopping about initially.

Absolutely love the chair - ten pounds for an easily cleaned highchair and takes us far less room than the massive alternatives that DD was always too small for!

theyoungvisiter · 04/08/2010 13:47

I have a right houdini and he can occasionally get out of the waist straps by extremely vigorous wiggling, then I have to remember to go round and tighten them again.

You can install a harness through the little holes for a tray, if you want to. But I wouldn't worry about that until she's 18 months plus.

deemented · 04/08/2010 13:58

Anyone have trouble using the tray with the inflatable insert? i'm worried i'll catch the insert and nick it as we're using the tray, and we've only had it a day and already manshapes had to get the puncture repair kit out...

cupcake75 · 04/08/2010 20:34

I had to stop using mine when she was about 10 months old as she kept standing up in it. Couldn't find a satisfactory way to attach a harness on it. Shame as it was so easy to keep clean. Have a Tripp Trapp which she also stood up in constantly but it is easier to fit a harness on it.

herbgarden · 04/08/2010 20:46

DD is 18 months and I love it . I had a svan for my son but he's still using it so it couldn't be passed down and I wasn't buying another one at £130....

Antilop cleans really well. DD doesn't seem to want to stand up under the straps....I've knotted the straps so that they're quite tight on her.

When they're little the tray is at a really good height unlike some of those other high chairs where the tray almost seems at chin height !

pigleychez · 04/08/2010 22:53

We have this for DD and love it.

really easy to clean, when its really grubby its gets chucked in the dishwasher.

We too have never bothered with the straps and shes never tried to escape. Shes just turned 2.

Its really easy to take out with you for family and friends houses. Just pop the legs off and pop it in the boot of the car

cryhavoc · 04/08/2010 23:01

I put my DD in it when she was about 21 months when I finally gave in and threw the expensive-but-ridiculous M&P monstrosity my parents bought her away.

Can't comment for a smaller child, but for my daredevil toddler it's been great. Easy to clean, and rather than use the tray we push her up to the table so she is more clearly eating with us.

She actually does the clip up herself now (she is 2.5) and has never tried to escape (I am VERY strict about behaviour at the table though).

omnishambles · 04/08/2010 23:06

at asking collective MN whether we have an Antilop - they give them out at registration dont they?

Yes we all have one and yes its safe enough.

franke · 04/08/2010 23:06

We got this as a temporary replacement for the Tripp Trapp that dc3 kept climbing out of. It's been fine so far. When I put him in it, he does up the seat belt himself - job done!

lolalotta · 05/08/2010 11:51

Thanks ladies for all your replies! My dd seems much more secure now I have propped a cushion behind her so thanks for that tip (I want to get that inflatable-thingy now too!)I am loving the Antilop, it is so easy to wash down, lol! Bargain for £15.00!!! My little girl loks so grown-up sat in it,proud-mummy-moment!

It's a great chair. Hygienic, very stable, unobtrusive.

Don't leave the room, though, because they will learn to escape the moment your back is turned....

BootyMum · 05/08/2010 12:05

I think this is the most fantastic highchair. Easy to clean and so cheap! I think it looks good too! My son is 16 mths old and he has had this highchair since he was about 6 months old. i think the waist strap is fine for him. He has been able to escape from other highchairs that we have used in restaurants and coffee shops but seems to be held snugly but comfortably in place with the antilop. And I do leave the room with him in it as he is perfectly happy just sitting in it... Highly recommend it!

megonthemoon · 05/08/2010 18:38

This chair is brilliant. Decided to try it before we invested in a ridiculously expensive Tripp trapp as we were a bit torn, and ended up using it until ds was 2 when he moved into booster seat on normal chair as didn't seem any point buying one that was ten times the price and definitely not ten times as good!

No problem with escaping - no foot rest means it's a bit harder than other chairs for them to get any leverage.

So easy to clean as well - and if particularly skanky could just put it in the dishwasher!

Wide leg base means it is surprisingly stable too. Have friend whose ds managed to knock Tripp trapp over by rocking so violently in it and pushing against table!

Love it- already quite excited about having dc2 use it as little ones look so cute sat right up to the table in it, and she hasn't even been born yet
