its really frustrating!when we started weaning he had only home cooked purées but as I was back and forth to my parents, jars were just easier to take than frozen. things have settled down now and were home most of the time so im trying to give him whatever we have eg scouse, cottage pie, Sunday lunch etc.its getting beyond now.im so fed up of scrubbing the bloody high chair!!once he's realised its not a jar he wont open his mouth, any sneaky chance i get to put food in, he gags then vomits!!
he's on stage 2 jars, the odd stage 3 which he seems ok with and has the odd finger foods. (he's not to fussed on them either tbh although he did eat a strawberry today!!yey!!)
I know this should be on the food board but i never get many replies there. I know some of you will say its my fault for putting him on those bloody jars 2 but life was very hectic!

cook your food, put it in a jar, serve? not trying to be flippant, but what is it about the jars that he likes so much? A texture thing? Maybe try giving him food you've cooked but try to imitate the texture of the jars?

yeah ive tried to get the texture the same but he just knows!clever little bugger.he's never sick on jars- unless there's a massive bit of potato in it!

I think if I were you I would abandon pureed food completely and just try him on proper food. For instance today for dinner DS2 had a roast potato (sliced in half) three finger shaped pieces of roast chicken, a spoonful of sweetcorn and a small bit of gravy. All served in a bowl.

He ate pretty much all of it, using his fingers. No input from us. He just sits in his highchair at the table eating whilst we eat.

TBh if he doesn't eat much for a meal or two it won't be the end of the world. He'll soon get the hang of feeding himself once he is hungry!

dirtgirlworld · 03/08/2010 22:38

thats sounds brilliant in theory-i will defo give it a go tomorrow but i just know he'll throw it all on floor, he hates finger foods, its like he has a fear of touching things! I only wish my child would sit at his high chair and eat nicely with us without the drama!

yeah - I'd be a fan of proper food for a 10 month old too - he's presumably still drinking a fair bit of milk so won't go hungry while he figures it out. Never gave DD purees (maybe once or twice, wouldn't touch 'em) - a good eater now at 18mo (the only toddler I know who will eat mackerel!!)

TBH DS2 is a third child and doesn't get too much attention during meals. He just gets on with it. TBH I think he eats better for not being as fussed over as the first two! LOL

At 10 months he wasn't eating loads but clearly along with his milk it was enough. He is 14 months now and eats 'proper' food really well now and in larger quantities. For example he will easily eat a whole banana or two satsumas for a snack.
