Is this wise? Am I alone in thinking its almost selfish?

is it selfish? i use a trailer for my 21month old and was looking at a newer one with a baby sling inster for when baby#5 arrives? a bike is my mode of transport, as dont have a car.

What is selfish? Four months is far too young to go in a trailer but they are better off without a helmet as the trailers are not designed for them to wear a helmet. The trailers are like a roll cage and baby is strapped in.

btw, i dont cycle on roads, i use the cycle paths around where i live.

Am i alone in thinking you are v. judgemental??

If you read the thread you linked to the guy has decided that the child is too young for a trailer so what's your problem??

I used one for my ds from 9 months, he could hold his head and i used an extra support thing. I cycle on roads too ().

Obviously i wouldnt be heading down a dual carriage way on it but as long as i cycle safely then i dont see a problem.

FWIW in my personal experience cars give you a much wider berth with a trailer attached than they do if you just have a child on a bike seat.

There's a German insert thingie you can get like an infant carrier which allows you to put babies into a cycle trailer. I heard about this from a lady who does it in my NCT region - and we live in south London. She also suggests cycling with a new born in a sling.

We've used a bike trailer for both DCs since they were about 9 or 10 months old. They do wear helmets though don't need to and as someone else said you get a wider berth given by cars. When we put DD1 in a conventional bike seat, she fell asleep, head lolling around and her helmet almost came off....know which method I prefer!!!

The german infant insert for certain bike trailers referred to is known as a baby sling .
for pics .

Used our CTS chariot with out one from 6/7 month ish as DS was sitting well and holding his head just fine by then. Never used a helmet in our Chariot as it would just have pushed the childs head forward uncomfortably with out adding anything to his safety.

IF however a child is on an exposed bike seat I think they should wear a helmet. adults sometimes drop loaded bikes, you can't "drop" a trailer, even if the bike goes over the trailer stays upright. DH found this out on black ice one morning. I found it out one day with very laden panniers and stopping on a cambered bike path.
