2 questions from Cloth Nappy Virgin!

Q1) I am planning on using cloth nappies for when baby arrives in September. I've decided on birth to potty nappies as I figure I might as well use them for my toddler too.

Can you recommend a good Birth to Potty nappy?

Q2) When the baby is born I was thinking of using Muslins in a "Jo Fold" (I think it's called) with a nappi nippa just until baby is big enough for the B2P nappies.

Do I need to use wraps over these? Again which one's would you recommend?

Thanks.

  1. sorry, never used btps
  1. yes you'll need a wrap. Motherease are very good indeed.

There are many many BTP nappies out there.
Personally, I have always used Easy Peasy Nappies Bumbles and Tots Bots Organic Cotton Nappies.
Both have served me very well and I have used them right from birth with both my DCs. I continued with DD until she potty trained at aged 2.5 and still use them with DS who is currently 1.9.
Both companies have brought out new ranges since I started, but I'm afraid I can't comment on those.

You can certainly use muslins in the very beginning. I did something similar too, as they are easy to wash and dry quickly.
You will need a wrap to cover them.
I have used various different brands and have found Motherease to be the best. They work well over pretty much any nappies.
I used velcro fasteners in the beginning and then changed to popper ones when my DCs got big enough to start undoing them.
Don't forget that although you can use the BTP nappies for any size baby, you do need wraps that fit correctly at each stage.
You will probably need about 3 of each size.

Hi i have used on recommendation (from some lovely mumsnetters) motherease birth to potty and motherease wraps.

Dont know if you plan to breastfeed but i have to say although slightly bulky on a new newborn they are bombproof.

Prob not the most exciting visually..there are so many completely over the top but lush nappies out there. It can get addictive believe it or not lol

Ive oppted for my completely realiable motherease birth to potty for half my stash (selling other half on ebay) and then some fancy nappies to top it up

1 - I use totsbots Easyfit V2 and Bumgenius both are fab - totsbots are by far the best pattern and my DD's favorite nappy, Bumgenius V3 are not on sale most places as they have just brought our V4. By a few of each to try before buying a whole stash you find you don't like. The BTP nappies fit from about 8lbs but are very bulky on newborns

You will need a wrap on the muslin Motherease are popper and can adjust well to big/small waist or thighs I also use totswraps. I would get 3 or 4 wraps as they can be used for a couple of changes before you need a clean one.

The easyfits and bumgenius are all in one nappies so the wrap is already part of the nappy.

lifeas3plus1 · 31/07/2010 20:25

Brilliant.

So Motherease wraps it is then. lol.

Yes, I'm planning on breastfeeding so will look into Motherease nappies too as bombproof is good. lol.

I've been having a look at B2P nappies. I found a website that does a nappy called Coolababy which look very similar to the Bumgenius but a lot cheaper.

Thinking maybe get a couple of each (including the tot's bot's as I like the pretty patterns lol) and try them out on toddler first anyway.

Thank-You

I have one coolababy as i heard lots of goods things about it for its price.

But it leaked on my 14lb ds too big around his legs. Im hoping it might be better once he is bigger.

Seems ok on my dd 28mth, although does get damp around the edges but might need more boosting

oopsandbabycoconuts · 31/07/2010 20:38

I use the Tots and the bumgenius on both my 9wk old DD2 and my 23mo DD1 and have done from birth for them both. I also used Totsbots bamboozles with a motherease for night times as the BTP all in ones don't tend to last as a night nappy.

peachybums · 31/07/2010 21:19

I recommend bumgenius BTP they are a great nappy. I have a tots bots easyfit but dont like them as my 12 week old DD is a heavy wetter and the aplix gets soaked and sometimes rubs.

I used muslins for the first 2 weeks with a wrap and had no problems

cleanandclothed · 31/07/2010 21:24

I recommend Bumbles with motherease wraps.

ILoveDolly · 31/07/2010 21:32

I have some easypeasy and tots bits bamboozles (I know these aren't B2P). Both are really good . Motherease wraps, to reiterate some posts, are fab! All my nappies are on their second use and if anything, have improved with age!

Initially, I used muslins and I do have a stock of terry squares to fasten with nippas. i would recommend this as they are cheap, quick to dry and a good fall back if you unexpectedly run out of the main type you use. Motherease and Totsbots aplix wraps are fine with folded cloths as well as shaped nappies.

I like this website for advice and range of nappies on sale.

Enjoy!!

BikeRunSki · 31/07/2010 21:44

Don't whatever you do get Bambinex Easy comfort AIO B2P nappies. They look nice, feel lovely, are reasonably priced..... and leak like billio!

lifeas3plus1 · 31/07/2010 22:20

Ok, Just out of interest, If I choose nappies that needed extra boosters, I would probably make them myself.

What would be the best material to use?

Also Liners, Are the necessary and could I make these out of something too or should I just stick to flushable liners?

OP posts:
oopsandbabycoconuts · 31/07/2010 22:24

I make my own liners out of microfibre cloths - they are on offerin Tesco/Asda at the moment £3 for 5 - I trim off the edges, fold into 3 or 4 (which ever fits the nappy best) and sew around the edges.

I use fleece liners as it keeps skin drier - again I made my own, I dought a cheap fleece blanket from the market and cut an hourglass shape and then just line the nappy with it. DOn't use a double layer of fleece for lining as 2 layers of fleece make a waterproof layer.

oopsandbabycoconuts · 31/07/2010 22:25

I make my own boosters out of microfibre!

blake11 · 31/07/2010 23:16

I used paper liners initially, but found they often scrunched up so half the poo ended up on the nappy anyway! Have now switched to hourglass shaped fleece liners (Nature Babies) and am much happier. They stay smooth, so catch all bfp, and keep dd's bottom dry. They don't stain either, & dry super fast. We use Lollipop softee nappies by the way, which are excellent, but have only just become a gd fit at 12lbs, they looked disproportionately huge before!

blake11 · 31/07/2010 23:18

Also, with regard to paper liners, when out and about, I find that baby changing rooms often don't have a toilet in, so the flushable element becomes redundant.

SmacsGonePotty · 01/08/2010 09:00

Another Bumgenius v3 fan here for your birth to potty option. Lots of bargains out there as places are clearing stock for the v4. My baby was big so it didn't seem bulky from birth but the company suggest 8lbs as the lower limit.
I don't bother with liners on my little one who is still breastfeed but do use flushable liners for my toddler as it is the easiest way to drop the poo down the toilet.
Little lamb bamboo boosters fit nicely under BG here
As for being out and about an no toilet I just roll up the nappy and contents and deal with it at home if there is no toilet available.

lifeas3plus1 · 01/08/2010 20:41

You've all been extremely helpful. Just 1 more question I promise.

How many nappies do you think I'll need?

I'm thinking of having mostly Motherease Birth to Potty with wraps and throwing in a few BG's and Tot's Bot's AIO's (for Dp)

I'm going to have an (hopefully) exclusively BF newborn and a 17/18 month old toddler who, on average, poo's once a day. Ideally I only want to do a wash every other day!

OP posts:
steph1512 · 01/08/2010 20:54

Good plan similar to me few motherease btp plus BG'S AND some itti's!

Ill leave it to the more experienced to say how many you'll need! i would imagine 20ish maybe more in early days.

Ps dont know if your going new or preloved but i am selling 10motherease and 3wraps on ebay if your interested

steph1512 · 01/08/2010 21:05

Just one lonely itti but not for long ..hope they dont let me down lol

lifeas3plus1 · 01/08/2010 21:15
