Any tips on potty training a 2yr old boy?

Ds is just turned 2 but for last couple weeks has been telling me before he does a wee and a poo (although 'poos' often turn out to just be farts) so i have decided to try potty training him.

Dd was 2.9 when she came out of nappies and had been ready for a while but due to my circumstances it hadnt been possible til then so when we did she got it almost straight away with no problems at all but cos ds is so much younger im a bit worried that its too soon but he does really seem ready. I think its gonna be very different though so just wondered if anyone else has potty trained theirs at this age and might have any tips or advice for me?

TIA

I trained my ds when he was 2yrs 4m. He did same telling me when he was peeing and poohing. So I took him shopping for some big boy vest and pants and a whinnie pooh toilet seat. He was trained within 3days, no accidents. He never used a potty.

Wow i hope ds is that quick! Dd was like that but she was that much older.
The thing im worried about is his ability to really understand everything, i know he knows what hes doing and i know he can definately control it and hold it im just a bit worried he wont really understand what it is i want from him. But ill try, he's been suprising me alot lately so hopefully he will again. If not ill just wait a few weeks or so then try again.

But more tips and advice would be lovely, im planning to start in the morning!!

My ds hated the potty, was much happier when i realised that he wanted to use the big toilet like everyone else. Just an idea if he doesn't take to the potty.

Yeah i did try ds on the toilet the other day when he was telling me wee wee and didnt like the potty i had but he seemed much more interested in flushing it and trying to stick his hand down to play with the water!

I have bought a new chair type potty and he seems to find it much more comfortable but tonight when he was telling me wee wee i took his nappy off and he started to wee on the carpet so i said on potty and he sat on it on and off but held his wee in for half an hour before i gave up and put his nappy back on cos it was past his bedtime.

Think tomorrow i will just go for it, no nappies all day and see what happens!

Although i dont have any big boy pants only pull ups which not really much good he'll think they're nappies. Perhaps i should buy some tomorrow and start next day.

Or i could put him in dds pink pants, not sure his daddy would be too impressed with that though!!

Do what you are planning to do - take his nappy off and keep an eye on him! Ds has just about got the hang at 23 months and I definitely think if they can 'see' what comes out for a few days then they have much more of an idea what the sensation means. Just keep telling him that poos and wees go in the potty, not on the floor, carpet etc (in a very light hearted, encouraging way). And by all means put him in your dd's old pants (exactly what I did) until he gets the idea a bit more - you can always bin them if they are full of poo! When he gets better at it all, get him some nice big boy pants. Good luck!

Thanks cha. Ive just toilet trained my puppy in 5 weeks, he's only 3 months old and doesnt speak a word of english so if i can do him then ds should be a piece of cake!

Maybe...

should be a doddle then...ho hum...

I'm hoping my dd who is 26months will be as good as my ds when I start training her in 2months time! She has started using the winnie pooh toilet seat that I had for ds and so far we have had 3 wees! I'm using Dora Explorer training pants by pampers!

pesha · 24/08/2005 18:51

Its not going well

Will sit on the potty quite happily for 5 or 10 mins at a time, tells me before he does a wee but will not sit on potty and wee at the same time! And when he starts to wee and i say on the potty he stops himself and can hold it in for ages!

He quite clearly knows when he is going to wee and poo and can control it so in that sense he is definately ready but im wondering whether he's just not old enough to really understand what it is i want.

Is this normal for him to not do anything on his 1st day, should i persevere and hope he gets better and just give him time to get used to it?

Or would i be better to put him back in nappies and wait a few weeks or months til his talking and understanding has come on a bit more and then try again?

Dd was so easy and way past being ready so i dont really know what to expect from him

pesha, my ds is the same age and I took his nappies off 2 weeks ago. We had no success at all for the first 2 or 3 days (which was disheartening and frustrating but now so unexpected as dd was similar) but he's really come on since then. I said I would give it a week and see how it went and he improved enough over that time for me to stick with it. He does get Smarties as a reward though .

Good luck x

pesha · 24/08/2005 20:56

I offered ds a choc button as a reward but until he does it he cant get 1 so doesnt really understand. He did do a wee on it yesterday when i was showing him the potty and i made a fuss but he hasnt wanted to do it since. Dd also did a wee on it to show him and i clapped her and things after.

But anyway, thanks for your advice clayhead as long as i know that its normal for them to take a few days before they'll even do anything then im happy to carry on (well not happy as such, scrubbing carpets isnt really my idea of fun!). Just wanted reassurance that i wasnt pushing him too soon. So thank you everyone

And if anyone has any more advice or comments or anything then id love to hear it, got a feeling im gonna need all the help i can get!

Pesha you could maybe leave it for a few weeks and try again if you have no success in the next few days! That way he'll forget whats happening now, and it will be a fresh start and approach to training again! As you say he may just be a tad too small at the moment!

pesha · 25/08/2005 14:57

Thanks kidstrack i have actually decided to stop for now. Hes supposed to be going to stay with his dad and grandparents this weekend and grandad will be just out of hospital so dont think its really what they need and will be bit confusing for him too. And he does seem to be reluctant to use the potty as well still. This morning, before i knew he was going at the weekend and before id decided to stop he had nothing on and was standing there pressing his legs together desperately trying to keep it in bless him! He just doesnt want to do it on the potty.
I think if i persisted he would get there but there would be alot of accidents and i dont want to make a big deal of it and get him stressed or cause more problems so i am going to wait a couple of months til his communication has come on a bit and he can really understand what im asking of him. Its 6 months before he can start playschool so im not in any rush.
And is it just me or does boys wee smell alot worse than girls?!!

OP posts:
Kidstrack2 · 25/08/2005 20:23

Yeah theres supposedly more ammonium in boys wee! I'll let you know how I get on in a few months when I start training with dd!

pesha · 25/08/2005 21:59

Ive used over half a thing of febreze today trying to get rid of the smell and he's only done a day and a half without a nappy!

And i did scrub each one when he did it too by the way! Dds right, boys are smelly

And you never know we might end up training them at the same time then we can share moans and, hopefully, triumphs
