Cradle cap - what are your tips?

Hi all, I know its probably been done before but I just wanted to know your tried & tested tips on getting rid of cradle cap. I have a DS age 15weeks who has it quite a lot. The shampoo doesnt really make much difference tbh and have tried babyoil on it before washing but nothing really gets it apart from picking it off! I know I shouldnt really do this & I dont want to make his head sore.
Do you think washing it more or less often makes any difference? any other tips please? thanks

My hairdresser recommended using a small amount of bicarbonate of soda mixed with water (so essentially a paste) and gently massaging into the scalp when in the bath. I did this and then applied some of the Weleda Calendula oil and it was gone.

Since then she's only had the tiniest patches very occasionally, I just repeat the above and it works every time.

Just out of interest - are there any mums out there that dont love picking?

DH used to get annoyed with me when he came home from work and found the best bits of DD's gone!

Mind you, there was plenty to go round, poor DD's cradle cap came down to the top of her nose! (unfortunate family monobrow, though a blond and fluffy version )

www.amazon.co.uk/Kamillosan-Natural-Cradle-Chamomile-spray/dp/B001M46W6Y

this got rid of ds2's very bad cradle cap instantly...came back a few times.... then that was the end of it forever (whereas ds1 had had it for several years)

used it on dd at the first sign and it's never come back

Coal tar shampoo!! Smells and looks disgusting but works.....

ds1 (now 21!) had horrendous cradle cap and I tried absolutely everything, picking it, oil etc etc. Doc prescribed the shampoo when he was about 1yr old, as the cradle cap was leaving nasty sores when picked off.

You can buy it in boots, I saw it the other day actually.

organic at hear healing mummy and baby balm from waittrose then whiped off softly with tissue or muslin.....(lovely smell too-but I suspect it's the posh equiv of olive oil )

Vaseline works too.

Rub some vaseline in then wash off.

By the way, I love picking it off DS

ohnelly · 31/07/2010 08:38

Thanks for all your tips! I tried Olive oil with a very fine comb and got loads of it out - think will need another go to get the rest or try out some of these tips
