What to wear under a swaddle

DS is now 17 days old and I've got a couple of Gro swaddle thingies. They're quite thin and 100% cotton so I was wondering what he should be wearing underneath? It's really warm in our bedroom at night at the moment - about 23-24 degrees usually.

Also, I've been looking at Grobags and on their site it says that they shouldn't be used until babies are 8lbs 8oz, the reason being their heads might be too small and go down through the head hole. DS is currently about 8lbs but his head circumference is on the 98th percentile at 39cm. Might he be ok in a grobag? Neurotic first time mum here who doesn't want to take any chances!

Many thanks in advance for your advice

In this heat? One thin layer of cotton is fine and please don't put him in a grobag, he'll sweat to death!

there are 0.5tog and 1tog grobags which would be ok when it is hot. A short sleeved bodysuit is probably all your lo will need to wear.

I swaddled mine in a small cotton sheet. In hot weather they had on either a sleeveless body vest and nappy or just a nappy.

No experience with swaddle 'thingies' as I never saw a need for them.

DD2 wears a longsleeved vest when I swaddle as she has Houdini arms and she ends up with chilly arms at 3am. DD1 is in a grobag 0.5 tog with a shortsleeved vest underneath (but during the night she often collects her little duvet and snuggles in that too ending up roasting but refuses to give either up. If you have a light grobag I wold give it a try (maybe a nap?) - check his head against the neck hole and make sure he cannot get inside it or get stuck. You may well find he prefers being swaddled at this stage though.

When you buy the grobag it will come with a label telling you what they advice DC sleeps in when wearing it.
Mine always seemed to be 1 step higher than their recommendation but I think thats because we moved from Spain to the UK and he was used to the heat. Plus in Spain they swaddle and cover with a blanket (no kidding) in 30 degree heat, so DS got v.v. hot for a while. Maybe thats why he kept waking up for milk - dehydration!
Anyway, he's 15-months now and we've finished with the grobags and moved to sheets and blankets.

I've been looking for the same information this morning. Found this helpful info graph on the gro swaddle website.

www.gro-store.com/guides/swaddle

Has guide for what to dress in pending on the temperature. Think I have been overdoing it somewhat...Hmm
