copper coil contraception

I know this has been done before and sorry - I cannot see any very recent threads so please forgive me if this is an oft repeated topic. Trying to decide between copper coil and mirena - am having one of them fitted on 10 august and need to decide before then.
Apart from heavy periods and cramps etc are there any other disadvantages of the copper coil? Lack of extra hormones introduced into my body seems attractive feature of copper coil but cannot decide between the two. Any thoughts very gratefully received

I researched as much as I could and I am going for copper - the only downside to it seems to be heavy periods, whereas the mirena sometimes stops them. I have read alot of cons to the mirena so, for me, copper is definatly the one I want

I did see the other day there is a family planning section on MN (who knew? ) - this may get more response over there

o thanks lemonade that is very helpful, i might repost at family planning section
my other worry was (ironically) not having periods - I realise the risk is very slim but if you have no periods with the mirena how owuld you ever know if you (very unusually) fell pregnant? Hopefully the sitaution would never arise but cannot see how you would know until it was well well too late if you never had periods with the mirena in

I have a copper coil. My periods vary, some are quite light and very thin. Others are very heavy and I had one full of clots so wondering if I had been pregnant but not realised. My cycles have also changed - where very regular but not anymore which is quite uncommon as it's not a hormonal treatment.

I've had both, currently have a copper one in.
I think it really depends on how you get on with hormonal contraception, if you don't have any reaction then you may get on really well with the mirena. I react very badly, think severe pms for 90% of the time (with suicidal thoughts) so it wasn't for me.

However, the lack of periods is brilliant, it's amazing how much difference not having them can make.

as a form of contraception, the coil is great as you don't need to think about it.

i have had the copper one twice now, and its fine, i had light periods before so they have gone a bit heavier for a couple of days but still only last 4 - 5 days, some months i get quite bad period pains but not more than before. I chose copper as i get really bad migrains and constant headaches for days when i have been on the pill before but ive started to get them again, and really bad pmt so im thinking of changing it to the mirena one. but im worried about the other side affects of that one too.
