So sore she cries when weeing

Yes its another nappy question.

Bea has had Diahorea since yesterday and has got so sore that she is crying when she wees. She has had some bad bouts of nappy rash over the weeks but this has topped it all.

We have tried sudocream, vasceline and calendula. Not sure which has been best.

I have taken her nappy off for short spells but with the Diahorea its a bit dodgy.

Any tips or advice would be welcome

A nice cool bath, and leave her to air dry. I find sudocrem really using. Used to be a nurse and used it lots then. But you are doing the right things.

EnidfromtheVILLAGE · 22/08/2005 09:45

sudocreme can be very drying.

vaseline is best (makes a barrier) from the three you have mentioned.

Have you tried Metanium (from boots and a miracle for terrible nappy rash)?

Twiglett · 22/08/2005 09:45

canesten cream .. much nappy rash is a fungal infection and can be treated with canesten cream .. a thin layer then a layer of barrier cream

nappy off and diorrhea is really difficult .. tough one

you could try a cloth nappy - will hold most of the poo and let her skin breathe?

Beabea · 22/08/2005 10:20

Thanks for the tips and encouragement.

I dont what to keep swapping creams as thats not good either apparently. I put vacseline on last so may continue with that for a day or two then see how she is.

I will try putting her in the paddling pool with a towel in the bottom in the front room without her nappy on too.

Thanks

don't think swapping creams will do any harm

vaseline is just a barrier so can't see that helping resolve a chronic nappy rash .. it will just stop it getting worse

I would try the canesten for a couple of days .. the results are quite quick

and try for open air .. if weather's ok could you hang around the garden nappyless?

alison222 · 22/08/2005 10:38

canesten and metanium. Canesten first then themetanium. Works wonders. The metanium is a much better barrier than sudocreme

Beabea · 22/08/2005 11:01

Ok will give the canestan a go.

No chance on the weather so far today. Pissing it down.

Beabea · 22/08/2005 11:02

How often should I apply the canestan?

i find bepanthen excellent for nappy rash,
obviously you know about leaving the nappy off

if you're worried about using too many creams then you can use beaten egg white... only as a barrier, it won't actually cure the rash

pesha · 22/08/2005 11:18

When my ds was about 1 he had terrible nappy rash which started from diarrhoea, it took 3 visits to drs and hv and several weeks of unbearably sore often bleeding bottom before i finally saw a dr who gave me a hydrocortisone (sp) cream and within 3 days it was completely gone. I was so angry that id seen them so many times and asked for something and just been told to use sudocrem and no wipes when obviously that wasnt working for him
Saying that it is worth trying other things 1st if you can but if it gets too bad or its not clearing up then i would go to your dr and insist they give you something for it

moondog · 22/08/2005 11:29

In my baby's nursery (run by ex m/w) they used to put the babies with sore nether regions into a tepid salted bath for half an hour or so. it really worked.

Twiglett · 22/08/2005 11:58

beabea .. re canesten every nappy change

pesha I wouldn't be too annoyed at GPs because that's a steroid cream which is best avoided if at all possible

tepid salty bath sounds a great idea

also like the paddling pool in front room idea

vkone · 22/08/2005 15:18

If you have any muslins, try using these as nappies. Ds recently had salmonella poisoning and had hysterics at each nappy change due to the awful D (can't spell it so won't try). We put him in muslins and terry squares so that air got to his bot but i didn't have to follow him round with a pooperscooper .

One other thought, you say she's crying when weeing, could she have cystitis? If some bacteria travelled to her urethra, this may be why she's upset. If it looks as tho weeing is causing her pain (rather than the urine being in contact with her skin), a Drs visit would be necessary

alison222 · 22/08/2005 17:11

forgot to say when dd had really bad nappy rash we ended at the doctors as canesten didn't cure it. We then got an all singing all dancing cream - antifungal, antibiotic, hydrocortisone which got rid of the soreness in less than 24 hours. It has to be prescribed though, so if it doesn't go soon, don't be afraid to go and see the doctor.

Beabea · 22/08/2005 21:50

Thanks to all

We ended up at the GP today with something similar to diralyte. Also a cream for her botty called Daktacort.

I dont think she has cystitis as it is pain on contact with the rash.

Hopefully she will be feeling a lot better in the next 24hrs.

Cheers

All seems to be working so I should be able to give Bea some cereal later today. And she isnt crying when I clean her bottom.

A much happier Mum :-)

And a much happier baby too???
Glad to see it is improving

Beabea · 23/08/2005 13:33

Yes happier in one sense but she is refusing to drink the diralyte stuff and is hungry. Lucky she is sleeping now and by the time she wakes I should be able to give her usual milk and some cereal for tea.

Dioralyte tastes horrid though. If they are really ill and dehydrated they usually drink it. I remember one really bad time I had S&D and it tasted better than water. That's when you know you really need it.
I'm sure the doctor told you to keep pumping fluids into her so as long as you do this it should sort itself out.
Dry toast, Rich tea biscuits? they are very plain and may stay down? Or is she too young?

Beabea · 23/08/2005 14:14

DH wants to keep her off wheat as we suspect she has an allergy to that as well as Dairy. NOt yet proven just causious. Will stick to her cereal.

thanks
