Anyone know about appeals process / Extenuating circumstances?

I have failed my dissertation. This is crap. It means I cannot qualify untl next February/March (because of when exam boards sit) and whatever happens I will need to rewrite it.

Possible extenuating cicumstances - could be DD2 who is waiting for assessment for aspergers. Although I managed to pass the rest of my exams/modules in the last 6 months while this was going on.

Possible appeal - could be the fact that my supervisor said it was fine. Although even if I appeal the mark still stands and I would still have to rewrite it and it would mean my supervisor being investigated and while I am angry I'm not sure if I'd want to do that to her.

So I'm generally fucked either way.

Any advice?

If you feel your DD2's assessment has genuinely affected your work, then it is worth appealing. Otherwise, I would try again in February.

It doesn't sound like you'd have a good case under my university's regulations although your institution may be different. We only accept extenuation claims if made in advance (so not after you got the mark.) You also can't appeal against academic judgement so you'd have to prove a serious irregularity. We wouldn't see your tutor saying your dissertation was ok as a serious irregularity.

Sorry that you failed; make sure you understand where you went wrong and you'll be fine next time.

At ours EC have to be submitted within 14 days of the exam/submission. Even then a "fail" wouldn't become a pass; what happens is that you get another "first" chance to do the exam/submit the paper if your EC are upheld. As a result you then qualify for a further resit at a later date (does that make sense...?)

load of crap that it is.

I know the mark will stand. I know it is a bit crap. I am just majorly pissed off that I was told it was fine when it obviously wasn't.

I can't be arsed with the stress and hassle of appealing.(I am also a bit pissed off with the defesiveness I got when I asked about appealing)

will just get on and rewrite it. pile of shite that it is. grr.

What you might be able to do is argue for more support and feedback while you're re-writing. Last time I failed an exam, our teacher also told us we would be fine and I was furious - we were told they couldn't change a mark retrospectively but they were obliged to give us better support as (clearly!) the original tutor had told us the wrong things.

Would that be worth trying for?
