Summer holidays are here - what time do your dc go to bed during the hols?

...because unfortunately at the Plonker house, we have different ideas as to what is reasonable

Dd1 (10) insists that all her mates go to bed between 10.30 and 11pm in the hols and that I am "sooooooo mean"

I think 9.30 or thereabouts is perfectly late enough.

I'm prepared to admit if I'm being overly strict though ...despite what dd thinks, I'm not out to ruin her life

So, how old is your dc, and what time do they go to bed in the hols?
Would be handy to know what time they go to bed ordinarily too

dd's are nine and nearly seven.

Normally lights out at 9.

On holiday 10.45 - which is striclty speaking 9.45 because we will be in Europe, one hour ahead.

Back in the UK for last two weeks we will go for about 9.30 I think.

Far earlier than most, I'm sure. We stick to the same times regardless of holidays as I'm a mean mummy who thinks things are more fun when you've had enough sleep.

DD (7) will be in her room by 7.30 and will be zonked out by 8pm. DS (nearly 11) will be in his room by 7.45 and will fall asleep some time between 8.30 and 9pm.

DD1 7 and DD2 6 normally go to bed around 7.30, in the holidays they will go between 8 and 8.30. Maybe later occasionally!

DS2 10, normally goes at 8.30. Holidays it will be between 9-9,30.
DS1 13 normally goes at 9pm, holidays will be about 9.30.

Don't want them up too much later or i get no evening at all! No doubt will be some nights where they are up later ie if we go away anywhere.

DS 9 goes to bed at 8 lights out at 8.30
DD 5 goes to bed at 7.30 lights out at 8

We keep the same routine for the holidays however we are not as strict, so if they are watching something then they might stay up a bit later or if we are out etc.

I think you are being totally reasonable with the 9.30.

My neighbours have 2 kids - 9 and 12 and they are usually still awake and running around outside at 11pm. I really don't know how these kids function though - especially on a school night and I know it annoys their friends parents too as they want to do the same!

Most people I know with kids this age want them in and getting ready for bed by 9.30pm/10pm in the holidays.

PlanetEarth · 19/07/2010 21:18

Well my kids have to go to childcare most days as I'm working, so the same time as usual (lights out 9.15 for the 10 year old, around 9.45-10 for the 12 year old. On my days off, I still make them go to bed at the same time - days off are too precious to waste lying in bed in the mornings.

Besides which, we grown-ups need a little time to ourselves after they're in bed.

our routine doesn't vary at all when the holidays come round - DD(9) in bed by 8.15, DS (7) by 8. DD usually doesn't actually sleep until 9 but hey - I'm enjoying adult time downstairs so that's fine by me - i really need my evenings, especially in the endless summer hols

my kids really need their sleep and life isn't worth living in this family if they are tired, be it school term or holiday!
