I am planning on using disposables. I would like to use an environmentally friendly brand like nature babycare but only if they are not useless! I am not worried about cost - just want to know what the best disposable nappies are for newborns so that I can stock up before the arrival of DD1!
Also, aside from nappies I think I need -
Cotton wool
Wipes
Lotion
Sudocream
Vaseline
Lansinoh
Is there anything else I need? does anyone have any top tips for the best brands to buy?

nature babycare are fine ime - the sainsbury eco ones wer erubbish.
get cotton wool pads - like big versions of th eones for takin gmakeup off, and as large as you can find. Cotton balls are utterly useless and 'pleat' sheds everywhere.
Get nature babycare wipes too
Lotion not neccesary.
Sudocrem not necessary on routine basis, you only need it if they are rashy.
You migth want to use a mild barrier cream (eg waitrose baby bottom butter) though.
No idea what you might want vaseline for.
Lansinoh is very handy for nipples but not much use for nappy changing IME.

You will also need nappy sacks (Nature Baby again) a decent sized bin for by the chnage mat, and a wheelie / dustbin or somethign outside for the stinkers.

I know the lansinoh is for nipples! Its just on my list for the general nursery stock up from boots etc.
I have been told its a good idea to use vaseline on the baby's bottom for the first few days whilst she is doing meconium poos as apparently they are sticky and it can be difficult to clean it off? Thanks for the tip re big cotton wool pads - good to know. I have a nappy bin and a changing mat.

oh I see
I wouldn;t know as I used old flannels washable wipes, and they get off anything.

don;t forget breast pads (I liked Johnson's best) and mega extra huge sanitary towels

You will also need (eventually) a thermometer and some Calpol.

I used washable wipes as like mrsbadger says they get off anything lol. You dont need different types of cream just one will do, its not recommended to use a barrier like vaseline unless totally needed. And yes, use cotton pads they are much easier for a new born

I would get a few brands of nappies as some fit better than others. A spray bottle is good for wetting cotton wool or flannels. We moved quickly onto wet wipes

Agree on a good digital in-ear thermometer. We've also got given a cheap waterproof cardboard bath thermometer - this is brill and we still use it now (DD is 11 months!).

Breast pads with sticky on the back were invaluable in the early weeks of BFing. I couldn't manage to wear a bra so just wore a t-shirt and stuck the breast pads on the inside.
