Happy street, a trike and other bits and bobs.

BadHair · 20/08/2005 23:12

Ds1 had a wooden bead frame and a shape sorter, and ds2 had a hammer and pegs game and a shape building rocking boat thing with a bell on it from Hamleys.
Grandparents got ds1 a toddle truck with soft bricks in from Mamas and Papas, and a Duplo set in a tipper truck lorry. Sadly I can't remember what they got for ds2.
Someone got them helium balloons with small teddy bears attached too, as they were both fascinated with them. They weren't suitable for under 3 years, though, so we had to keep them out of reach.
I always hoped that someone would get one of those soft sit on rocking animals from Mamas and Papas, but no-one did.
Hope this helps.

Fairycakes, definitely get one - they're lovely. I wanted either a lion or a donkey. Didn't like the weird caterpillar thing - found its eyes scary!
My local housewares shop does a M&P line for Christmas, and it came in this week. I spent 15 mins eyeing up the rocking horses today instead of buying gloss paint. Wonder if I can persuade grandparents to cough up for one as a shared present?

ghost · 20/08/2005 23:55

we brought a rocking horse - suitable from 4 years!!!! on sale in Toys -r-us at rockbottom price . We decided to get something that she might want to keep as a mememto of her childhood.

CountessDracula · 21/08/2005 00:01

one of these she still adores it aged nearly 3

BadHair · 21/08/2005 00:02

Ooh - Toys r Us is next to B&Q and I have to pop in for yet more paint tomorrow. I think a small detour might be in order. Thank you Ghost.

Monstersmum · 21/08/2005 17:18

We got DS one of those sit-on-ride-on things (Argos do them) that you adapt as the child grows - i.e. it has a frame to support them if too young and a handle for adults to push and a place for them to rest their feet - you remove bits as necessary. DS has just turned 4 and STILL plays with it every day - def a value pressie!

I'm not buying much - this is ds3 and we have everything a 1 yr old could want in this house.

I've got a wooden Noah's ark for him with animals to go in it.

compo · 21/08/2005 18:53

nothing because we were/are skint. Parents and inlaws got lots - inlaws got him a rocking horse which has never been used

melbob · 21/08/2005 19:50

we got funky feet and a box of bricks from ELC which he loves throwing round the room!

fairycakes · 21/08/2005 20:26

anyone know roughly how much the mamas and papas rocking horses are? they dont show the prices in the catalogue - i have a feeling they were about £50 which is more than wanted to spend as alreay bought a few odds and sods, but i could just about stretch it is her FIRST ever birthday after all. but if more than £50 will have to save up for xmas

ghost · 21/08/2005 20:52

no idea how much m&p rocking horse cost but for the last two years at christmas Toys r us has done M& p rocking horses at great sale prices both the large and the small ones

Rarrie · 21/08/2005 20:56

M & P rocking horses are £50, but I got mine in Asda for £35. Keep an eye as they sometimes do them.

Other ideas are:

Teletubbies hill play set
Doll and push chair (My DDs favourite toy)
V Tech play and learn Ferris wheel thingy
Fisher price ball blaster
Teletubbies doll (with the moving tummy - another fave!)
Peek aboo Pom. (Doesn't watch fimbles, but still loves it and tell a story roly Mo)
Tea set (another fave)
Crazy Coupe car (about £30)
Happy land (Probably a bit old, but can grow into)
Boots do a fab shape sorter, that you turn the handles to put the bits in!
M&P Dudley duck that plays a tune
The ELC feet thing - stand on it and it makes a noise
My first car from ELC (but cheaper in Boots)
The little car things that they sit on and push themselves along. Some also play a tune etc

Hope these ideas help. My DD loves all of these toys (some not owned by us, but by firends... but they're dead faves)

Nothing. When he's old enough to care and ask what we got him we'll tell him a toy that he really loved and remembered! We buy him new toys when we realise it is the right time, so for example we went out recently and bought jigsaws when he was about 2 1/2. But then the poor boy does have his birthday two weeks after Xmas!

Hulababy · 21/08/2005 21:20

We bought Dd a CD player for her bedroom. Not really a present for her to use herself at the time - but she did like listening to music at night - but she uses it herself a lot now (she's 3yo).

She also recieved:

  • Doll's pushchair and dolls
  • funky footprints
  • Little Tykes lights and sounds kitchen, play food

Can't remember rest - we have a big family so lots of things - bricks, c,lothes, wooden bead frame, etc.

hellomama · 21/08/2005 22:05

We got DS a teepee from habitat (its called geronimo in the catalogue) and its great. He was a bit suspicious at first but now he loves it, I often find him sat in there looking at his things. Its also a great place to hide lots of crap if we have friends round for dinner and need to quickly tidy up the flat!

pesha · 21/08/2005 22:36

With both of mine ive bought them some toys, really cant remember what off the top of my head, but also a nice special teddy and dd got 2 royal doulton (i think) plate type things (sorry been a long day, brain not working!) one large one small with flower fairies on and ds got a silver teddy bear so they have something special to keep forever that they got for their 1st bday and you never know might one day become family heirloom type of thing! They both got so many toys from other people and had loads already i felt id rather get them something special that'll last

Aero · 21/08/2005 22:51

Sandpit and sand toys (and sand) -for ds1 - now seven. It's just been the best thing and it's been enjoyed by dd too and now ds2 loves it too.

polly28 · 22/08/2005 00:30

Both of mine got a childs oak chair, which they keep in their bedrooms. Its a family thing I've still got mine from when I was one,and so do all my brothers.

of course they got a few toys aswell

fairycakes · 23/08/2005 22:22

thanks rarrie, thats a really good list!
and thanks for all the other fab ideas - now which to choose....managed to convince my mum to get the rocking horse, so i can get a few other bits and bobs just need to decide which!
