Am I changing nappy too often?

Might sound like a silly question, but it has been prompted by something I read on another thread.

Got 3wk old first DD. Using disposables.

Do you change your DC's nappy whenever they do even just a wee?

I have been`changing if she's weed even though it might feel dry to the touch as I check at every feed or if she cries.

Am I being OTT???

Another thread suggested that its okay to leave babies in the same nappy all night as long as they haven't pooed.

Oooh dredging my memory here even though it's only a couple of years since I had a newborn....

I definitely only changed them at night if they had pooed. Probably in the day time too. Modern nappies absorb the pee so the baby's bums are not in contact with any liquid. Obviously, if the nappy is very full then you need to change it.

I think I would get through about 7/8 a day at the beginning?

Maybe just a wee bit OTT , and it must be costing you a small fortune!!

You definately don't need to change after every wee; usually every two to three (or four or five if it's child No 3 ) hours is fine, and yes, it's absolutely fine for them to be in the same nappy all night, unless they have done a poo.

Congratulations on your LO

If they do a poo in the night, but don't actually wake up, there is no need to set your alarm clock to go in and check for poo.
They will wake and cry if they are uncomfortable, if they are comfy enough to sleep through with a poo then leave them to it.

Meant to add, that if you pop in on the way to bed and notice that they reek, then do change them at that stage.

Thanks all.

Yes, it was getting expensive even at only 3wks in!!

I change disposables whenever it feels wet to the touch.

Do you change before or after a feed? My MW says feed, change, sleep but I find that he falls asleep almost on the boob and that changing him then wakes him and I can't get him to sleep after.

CoinOperatedGirl · 20/07/2010 01:09

Wouldn't have had a clue when my 3 week old's had peed tbh. I changed at a feed, or if it was obviously pooey/saggy . How do you know they have peed if the nappy is dry feeling .

Slur · 20/07/2010 01:11

OTT yes.

Slur · 20/07/2010 01:15

Congratulations also though!

Joyous thang about disposables, tip a bucket in there, change when they start walking bow legged.

I jest, but, seriously, not every time. Could probably do something better like, I dunno, sleep?

Funkycherry · 20/07/2010 11:14

Since posting this, I haven't been as OTT and guess what? - Baby is none the worse for it!! lol.

I had got into the habit of changing before a feed (ie every two hours)because she wouldn't feed the first week, so we had to strip her off / change her to wake her up.

Coin - by looking for the yellow colour

Slur - Sleep sounds like a much better use of time
