Terry flat nappies, anyone use them?

I am keen to start using reusable nappies when dc2 is born, but I am fairly low on cash so flat nappies seem to be the answer.

I just wondered how fiddly they really are to use and how leak proof they are? I would really like to give them a go, but would appreciate any advice you have for me.

Thanks.

If you can fold a stack of invoices so the address shows in a window envelope, then it's the same principle with terry squares: first one you fold you make a hash of and takes 10 minutes, second takes you 5, and after that you get so good you can do them in your sleep!

There's a booklet with instructions you can download [http://www.twinkleontheweb.co.uk/howtonappy.pdf here]

If you fold them well, secure with a nappi nippa and tuck the ends up the legs, there's no reason you can't make them just as effective as any nappy + wrap (and a nappy + wrap on a newborn is a lot more effective than a disposable IME!)

Thank you Ariela. I watched some videos on The nappy Lady site and the bat fold (for example) looks fairly straight forward.

I was thinking for days out and baby sitters I could have a pack of eco, biodegradable disposables (as recommended on many cloth nappy sites) to hand for quickies. Or maybe invest in a couple of all in ones.

I just think that there are too many shaped nappies to choose from with varying reviews and ridiculous prices. Flat nappies seem to be the most economic and they look cute too. I like the thought of going back to basics, and use what my mum used.

I found them a bit fiddly to be honest but I'm not the most dextrous person! They are reliable though if you are using a decent wrap. Good idea to have some alternatives to hand though for nappy novices!

Just to add - terries can look massive on tiny babies. It might be worth using muslins while baby is small?

woul reccomend terries over every other nappy, i used to sell real nappies so have a wide variety of types and still go back to my terries.#
start with muslins then bamboo terries, get some decent wraps motherease rikkis are bomb proof.
my DH can fold terries in his sleep and often folds the tea towl without thinking. pratice on a teddy bear then you will be expert.
the tucking of the legs is a useful trick to learn difficult to explain in words sure nappy lady does it on her tutorial will check. bat fold is the best all rounder fold.

Thanks for your advice ladies, yes I was going to use muslins to start because of the bulkiness of terries.

Rain, you have convinced me, I will order some samples soon and have a go, dd has plenty of teddy bears lol.

i am so glad i really am a terrie fan, i go mad with wraps and have loads of different colours and designs.
the other thing is they are so useful to have around my terries have not been out of use inbetween DS2(5) and DS3 (5mths) used for everything from mopping up to drying dishes swim towels everything.
just had to throw out a terrie nappy i wore as a baby asit was threadbare but had a good run of several babies over 30 years
