Im expecting my first purchase of cloth to arrive today..youve prob seen some of my other posts picking all of your brains?

I have another question lol

How does the baby bottom stay dry.

As far as im aware..im not expert so feel fell to correct me, but in a disposable the liquid passes through then get locked away in crystals/gel..i think? therefore the layer of nappy against skin is dry therefore the skin stays dry to

I know the liquid passes through the liner and or booster? be it fleece diposable?

But surely the liner say if its fleece gets way during the process? If so does this mean that your babies bum is constantly in contact with a wet or damp surface. Reason for my question is my ds does get sore easily

I don't know how it works, but the biodegradable ones I used with DD (Bambino Mio) did stop the moisture from seeping back to her bottom.
She does get eczema elsewhere on her skin, but never got nappy rash once.

Nappy liners. I use the Mothercare ones. the cloth nappy/booster can be quite damp but on the liner surface against the skin it is dry-ish. They wick, I suppose.

What are those gel/brystals made of? bet they're not biodegradable.

or even crystals.

am a bit of a hypocrite. We use disposables overnight.

Sodium poly-something. They're also used in hanging baskets. I think there are studies to 'prove' the safety of the gel crystals, but then there have also been studies about little boys scrotum temperatures and infertility or something.
And they were removed from tampons in the 80s because of toxic shock syndrome. I know they're not worn internally with nappies as they are with tampons - but I think they're still pretty close for a baby girl.

Fleece wicks away moisture and you will find that the babys bottom stays nicely dry if you use this.

It's the fleecy liners. As Beautifulgirls says... it wicks the moisture away. With our Itti Bittis, DD can sometimes feel dry if you just check the liner yet the booster underneath is wet. She's not had any nappy rash (except when she's in disposables!) so they must be doing something right

Just make sure you don't use fabric softener in the wash as it'll mess up the absorbent abilities of the nappies.

imgonnaliveforever · 23/07/2010 09:52

OP, your ds might be getting nappy rash because of the chemicals in disposables rather than because of wetness. Reusable nappies do mean babies have wetter bums, but this generally isn't a problem. Our skin is designed to cope with wetness. And if you think about it, with disposables they may not actually be wet but the wee is still there right next to their bums.

AppleAndBlackberry · 23/07/2010 10:20

I don't think it does necessarily stay dry. The nappy rash is supposed to be caused by the bacteria in poo rather than the urine so as long as you change poos quickly and clean thoroughly you shouldn't have a problem. I use a variety of nappies, some of them definitely don't keep the bottom dry but my DD has only once had bad nappy rash when she was teething.

I usually use pockets with suedecloth or fleece linings but recently he has been in Easyfits which are bamboo inner not staydry and I have noticed his bum is very slightly clammier but no sign of any soreness or rash, he is used to cloth though, been in since birth and only used disposibles on odd occassions.

AppleAndBlackberry · 01/08/2010 14:11

Fuzzibunz are generally dry because it's fleece lined. Bumgeniuses are quite dry too. Flexitots are very wet, as are Bamboozles and The Pop-In (bamboo).
