Stairgates and the cat

Has anyone got around the problem of stairgates and the fact that the cat can't get upstairs/downstairs because of them?

Just wondering what to do....

? can the cat not squeeze underneath or jump over the top?

If not rejoice! Keep the cat downstairs and enjoy the lack of grit in your bed? No more mice in the underwear draw ( mine did that!) No more claws in the foot at 3am? Ok it was a mad cat I may be biased!

Can't the cat just jump over it? Needs to get fitter if not (unless very old and infirm!)

I was worried about this too as the stairs are very steep. However, he does jump over them or he sits on one side and meows and meows and meows and meows...it's great .

I think he probably could.....I bought a really tall one for DSs room expressly to keep the cat out, so maybe I'm overestimating the height of normal stairgates

My cat was so feckin clever he would just watch how I opened it and then do it himself

mistressploppy · 15/07/2010 14:42

My cat is pretty thick so we might be waiting a long time for that, lamp!

My cat is quite old but she can jump over them if she really wants to.

Mine can't seem to jump it - I thought cats needed something they could jump onto and then off? Sounds now that my cat is just useless. I spend much of the day letting the cat through the stairgate in one direction then the other.

So no help to you here.

it will probably jump over or squeeze through. my cat is quite big but he can squeeze through the gap at the end of the stairgate.

AnnoyingOrange · 15/07/2010 20:14

my cat squeezed through when we had one

Cicatrice · 15/07/2010 20:14

Mine was too fat too get through it to begin with (or to jump over) but as child grew and we recovered our sanity -a bit - and he was less able to bully/confuse us into feeding him 6 times a day he lost enough weight to do both.

Most cats can jump it though, if they want to.

cakeywakey · 15/07/2010 20:15

Mine jump over the one in the kitchen, but just squeeze past the sides of the ones on the stairs - we have a perfect cat-sized gap on either side though as our stairs are quite wide.
