I've just done exactly the same and am a complete cloth nappy novice.

Am ridiculously excited but DP not convinced at all, so I'm keen to make it work to prove him wrong

steph1512 · 13/07/2010 14:39

lol...i am exaclty the same who would think i could get so excited about nappies and my dh is the same!

I can here the distant ring of i told you so if ive picked the wrong ones and they end up leaking etc

ps i was suppose to put in original post...'COMPLETE NAPPY VIRGIN SPEAK'

Find all the nappy terminology a bit overwhelming!

Oh me too but I keep thinking that I found all the baby/feeding/weaning terminology overwhelming initially so it'll all make sense soon...

To kick it off, I'd like to know:

Do you have to use the boosters all the time?

Do I need liners too?

What should I get to put the used nappies in prior to washing?

There's probably loads more I need to know but don't know what to ask....yet....

I make my own fleece liners - you can cut up an old fleece blanket, or buy a length of fleece to use (I got some on ebay).

Washing - I put mine into a washing net and store dry in a bucket with a lid on until wash time - then pick up the whole net and lob it in the machine without having to handle the dirty nappies. When I wash I put through a quick rinse cycle first and then on a proper 40 degree wash with a tiny amount of non-bio powder. If you use too much powder it can affect the absorbancy and actually make the nappies smell more in the long term. For nursery I have a "wet bag" - basically a waterproof bag for the nursery to store them in until we collect when we do the pick up.

Thanks beautifulgirls do you have a lockable nappy bin or normal bucket and lid?

I have done a couple of the questionaires online and they came up with as suggestions,

Bumgenius
totsbots bamboozles
easypeasy bimble

I like the look of all of them but have already got the 2nd hand motherease as i knew my dh wouldnt want me to slpash out too much!

I can get hold of some cheap totsbots..the old style with nippers 8.50 for 5. But would have to change them eventually as think they are size one or 2!

Is it worth getting these to?? Or just have a go with the ME first???

Hi Ok so how to con dads into loving cloth

First tell him how much money he will save lol!

motherease nappies work fab imo and their wraps are possibly the best around for explosive poos.

Tip - dads tend to like easy nappies, my DP loves bumgenius as they are just like disposables to put on with applix! Never had a leak with a Bumgenius yet!

DP doesnt like nappies with wraps because its two things to lean how to put on ;) so maybe get a few that dont need wraps for him to try haha.

I have a lockable lid for my bucket as have a curious toddler, and again DP cant moan as it keeps the smells in. I have a tots bots one

Make life as easy as possible for the dads and they will come to love cloth nappies ;) lol

Thanks beautifulgirls that's really useful info - Do you always have to do a rinse before a wash or can you just run a wash cycle?

Peachybums glad to hear that motherease are good for explosive poos...we have plenty of those! Thanks for the useful tips too - making things as easy as possible always works with my DP!

steph1512 · 15/07/2010 14:15

Plenty of explosive poos here to!

Ive been reading reviews on ME and they are generally good although some reviews say apparently not that great for heavy wetters..which my son is a very heavy wetter..really hope they stand up to the job so i can prove dh wrong on clothes

Another question i have is i am concerned that my ds's bottom wonted stay dry?

By this i mean that i think a diposable works by drawing the liquid away into the inside of the nappt into gel/crystals therefore leaving the surface actually against the skin stays dry..correct me if im wrong!

Do this mean the cloth nappies are quite oftne wet against the skin..i know you use a liner to draw the fliud away..but surely if its a fleece liner or a booster etc the surface gets.stays wet even after the liquid has soaked through to the lower layer??

Just wondered as my ds does also get a sore bum fairly easily

I've used Mothereas DRY for my girls and loved them.
Steph - DD1 did go through a phase of needing an extra booster pad that clips in - just adds an extra layer of absorption.

fleece will feel dry next to her skin. Or get the Motherease Dry which have the extra layer next to the skin

Enjoy !

steph1512 · 15/07/2010 21:29

Ok thanks..is motherease dry a different nappy or a liner/booster?
